Here is a literal feel-good story. Amish teen Daniel Troyer (of Jamesport, MO) needs a heart transplant. His condition (cardiomyopathy) had made it difficult for him to do even basic tasks like eating. He still needs a transplant – but a special implant has given him new energy and hope. From KCTV 5: At 17-years old, Daniel Troyer suffers from cardiomyopathy. His heart is dying….
How do Amish keep their homes warm? How do they dry laundry in winter? What kinds of cold weather activities are popular? And what’s the hardest thing about Amish life when the mercury drops? In today’s Q-and-A, Marie Graber, raised Amish in the Jamesport, Missouri community, answers these and other questions. Don Burke interviews Marie, and contributes some great photos taken in several settlements including…
Linda Stoltzfoos’ body was positively identified by the Lancaster County coroner, who performed an autopsy Friday. This puts an official confirmation on what had already been suspected, and strongly suggested in a Thursday press conference by Lancaster County DA Heather Adams. A brief report is here. It includes details on the nature of death, which I’ll leave out for anyone that wants to avoid that….
Very sad story from central PA, via the Altoona Mirror: Three members of an Amish family died in a farming accident Wednesday morning. Centre County Coroner Scott Sayers said Andrew Beiler, 47, and his two sons ages 14 and 19 died from asphyxiation after they were trapped inside a silo. The buildup in gases inside the silo caused their deaths, which have been ruled accidental….
Over the weekend an Amish teen in Vernon County, Wisconsin died while cutting ice. In light of today’s topic of Amish and self-sufficiency, it seems tragically coincidental to now hear of an accident like this one. In more conservative communities, Amish use ice houses to keep food cold. Â In cold-weather areas Amish harvest their own ice. Â In some sense these Amish are further along the…
Your opinion appreciated on any or all of these difficult issues: Snitz or shoofly? “Stoltzfuses” or “Stoltzfi”? New Year’s or 4th of July?

Milking time
(This is not such an odd occurrence. I have stood on the road many times when it was time to bring the cows home for milking, or when it was time to move the cows from one pasture to another. The road watcher has to make sure that cars are aware of the cows coming down the road AND that none of them make a break and run).

Grazy Cross Country Steakout
If I can get my thoughts cow-lected that I herd through the bo-vine, we cud chew the cud. These cows are not quite the moo-dy Whole-stains; they look like Belted Galloway cattle, also known as Oreo Cookie Cows. They aren’t from Mos-cow or Moo-ssouri, but they are de-calfinated. It’s amoosing that their horns don’t work, and they have nowhere to hide. No whey are they going to the mooovies. Some people pasture-eyes the milk. The steaks are high for the stock-holders. Butter not be the laughing stock, but it gives udder delight to milk it for what it’s worth. Got milk?
This one really made me laugh this morning. Moo-velous, Linda.
Final 5 voting tomorrow
Some funny responses here. I am disqualified from playing but the two that came to mind were “Bovine Boulevard” and “Woman vs. Cow”. We’ll have voting on the final 5 tomorrow.
