Mark Curtis let me take a few photos of his two-seater buggy while in Ohio last month. Â We took this to supper on the night I arrived. Â Very chilly that evening, so the extra-thick blanket you see below came in handy. I don’t know how many people you could fit in one this size (brings to mind the stunts with clowns cramming into a VW…
Thoughts, articles, links following last week’s Ohio visit: My new favorite soup? Â Cheeseburger. Â To the extent that you can call it soup. So thick it’s really a stew. Â Or let’s cut to the chase, this is basically a liquefied cheeseburger. Â Had a rib-sticking bowl last week at my Amish hosts’ table. Â By the way, is this an “Amish soup”? Â What makes something an “Amish soup”…
This is a neat story and a response to the idea that Amish don’t contribute to road upkeep. Amish in Monroe County, Wisconsin (Cashton settlement) recently made a donation to the local highway department. From the Monroe County Herald: The five most northern districts of the Cashton Amish community donated $6,275 to the Monroe County Highway Department. Monroe County Highway Commissioner David Ohnstad said a…
Why scooters, but not bikes? It’s a common question. I’ve never really come across a definitive answer, though have hit upon a theory or two after looking into it. Why do some Amish communities permit bicycles, but in others, only scooters are used? But I have good news. In an article at Lancaster Online, Steve Nolt provides an answer. It includes a couple of elements…
Pennsylvania Amishman John Stoltzfus has agreed to take some reader questions. We can’t guarantee answers to everything.  But if you’ve got something you’d like to ask John about the Amish, leave it in the comments here, and you might get an answer in a future post. And as John noted in his first post, “my views will not be the only view from our people,…

Milking time
(This is not such an odd occurrence. I have stood on the road many times when it was time to bring the cows home for milking, or when it was time to move the cows from one pasture to another. The road watcher has to make sure that cars are aware of the cows coming down the road AND that none of them make a break and run).

Grazy Cross Country Steakout
If I can get my thoughts cow-lected that I herd through the bo-vine, we cud chew the cud. These cows are not quite the moo-dy Whole-stains; they look like Belted Galloway cattle, also known as Oreo Cookie Cows. They aren’t from Mos-cow or Moo-ssouri, but they are de-calfinated. It’s amoosing that their horns don’t work, and they have nowhere to hide. No whey are they going to the mooovies. Some people pasture-eyes the milk. The steaks are high for the stock-holders. Butter not be the laughing stock, but it gives udder delight to milk it for what it’s worth. Got milk?
This one really made me laugh this morning. Moo-velous, Linda.
Final 5 voting tomorrow
Some funny responses here. I am disqualified from playing but the two that came to mind were “Bovine Boulevard” and “Woman vs. Cow”. We’ll have voting on the final 5 tomorrow.
