Amish children in the newly-formed Whitefield, Maine community have been provided reflective armbands by state transportation officials. This community was covered here earlier this year, and is maybe a year old, with just a few households. From centralmaine.com: At Wednesday’s meeting, which Marple said lasted about 90 minutes, the Amish received reflective armbands from the state transportation department that their children could wear when walking on…
Here’s another interesting YouTube comment (which turns out to be a good source of what people are thinking about the Amish). A commenter recently wrote “Amish = How can we make our lives as hard as possible and still survive?” While there might be some Amish who find a virtue of sorts in living very plainly, for many Amish, they appreciate comfort and try to…
Over the weekend an Amish teen in Vernon County, Wisconsin died while cutting ice. In light of today’s topic of Amish and self-sufficiency, it seems tragically coincidental to now hear of an accident like this one. In more conservative communities, Amish use ice houses to keep food cold. Â In cold-weather areas Amish harvest their own ice. Â In some sense these Amish are further along the…
In her latest, Lovina Eicher, an Amish mother of eight who writes the Lovina’s Amish Kitchen column, explains a challenge of everyday Amish life – making sure the water pump is working reliably enough for a shower. Lovina’s household’s water pump is run by a battery, in this case a solar powered-one. Lately in her Michigan community the sun hasn’t been doing its job, which…
Ever heard of Horse Progress Days? It is an annual event heavily attended by Amish (we’ve covered a previous edition in Michigan here and here). Here to explain more is David Arment of Restfulhome.net, with a look at this year’s event, held in northern Indiana. Horse Progress Days was held July 1st and 2nd at the MEC (Michiana Event Center) North of Howe, Indiana. The…
We’ve looked at Amish participation in Pennsylvania fire companies before. And each year mud sales are held throughout Lancaster County to support those companies, which are known for their heavy Amish makeup. But did you know that some Amish in New York also serve as volunteer firemen? According to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Amish are members of two fire companies in western New York, in Ovid and…

Milking time
(This is not such an odd occurrence. I have stood on the road many times when it was time to bring the cows home for milking, or when it was time to move the cows from one pasture to another. The road watcher has to make sure that cars are aware of the cows coming down the road AND that none of them make a break and run).

Grazy Cross Country Steakout
If I can get my thoughts cow-lected that I herd through the bo-vine, we cud chew the cud. These cows are not quite the moo-dy Whole-stains; they look like Belted Galloway cattle, also known as Oreo Cookie Cows. They aren’t from Mos-cow or Moo-ssouri, but they are de-calfinated. It’s amoosing that their horns don’t work, and they have nowhere to hide. No whey are they going to the mooovies. Some people pasture-eyes the milk. The steaks are high for the stock-holders. Butter not be the laughing stock, but it gives udder delight to milk it for what it’s worth. Got milk?
This one really made me laugh this morning. Moo-velous, Linda.
Final 5 voting tomorrow
