SI Live has published photos of Amish visitors to Staten Island, NYC in a nice slice-of-life look at Amish tourism. Of course “Amish tourism” usually means non-Amish people visiting places like Lancaster County. But as these images show, tourism goes the other way too. It seems that reporter Jan Somma-Hammel was at a Staten Island beach when a vanload of Amish happened to pull up….
The Clinic for Special Children holds a series of benefit auctions each year to fund their operations. If you’re not familiar with it, the clinic was founded 30 years ago by Dr. Holmes Morton in Strasburg, PA (Lancaster County), to help treat children with rare genetic ailments. Most of their patients are from the Amish and Mennonite communities, but they treat others as well. Here…
Eggs are disappearing in a major way in one Missouri Amish community. From a letter-to-the-editor in the Webster County Citizen: There is something the community needs to be aware of … someone is stealing eggs, chickens, along Highway C and some of the side roads. That may sound minor to most people, but when you make a living off your eggs as the Amish do,…
This obituary tells of an Amishman named Jonas A. Nisley who passed away late last month in Ohio. Jonas had 310 living descendants. If you add his step-descendants, you get an additional 70 individuals, for a total of 380 souls. Here’s the tally of his family, in addition to his twelve children: 96 grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; 201 great-grandchildren; 57 step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two step-great-great-grandchildren….
“Modem” and “Log on” are my favorites. I came across this old Facebook post by Sol’s in Berlin, a store in the heart of Holmes County, sharing the “Amishman’s Guide to Computer Lingo“. I’m not sure who the original author is, but this appeared in the Vendor, a Plain community newspaper. It was passed on to Sol’s by one of their Amish employees: One of…
In her latest column, Amish Cook Gloria Yoder describes the tradition of “Secret Sisters” in her community. This was tied to a Valentine Supper which is something you’ll see among Amish. Gloria first describes the Secret Sisters custom: Last night I was the recipient of the absolute kindness of the dear youth girls in our church. Really now, they all made a huge splash for…

Milking time
(This is not such an odd occurrence. I have stood on the road many times when it was time to bring the cows home for milking, or when it was time to move the cows from one pasture to another. The road watcher has to make sure that cars are aware of the cows coming down the road AND that none of them make a break and run).

Grazy Cross Country Steakout
If I can get my thoughts cow-lected that I herd through the bo-vine, we cud chew the cud. These cows are not quite the moo-dy Whole-stains; they look like Belted Galloway cattle, also known as Oreo Cookie Cows. They aren’t from Mos-cow or Moo-ssouri, but they are de-calfinated. It’s amoosing that their horns don’t work, and they have nowhere to hide. No whey are they going to the mooovies. Some people pasture-eyes the milk. The steaks are high for the stock-holders. Butter not be the laughing stock, but it gives udder delight to milk it for what it’s worth. Got milk?
This one really made me laugh this morning. Moo-velous, Linda.
Final 5 voting tomorrow
Some funny responses here. I am disqualified from playing but the two that came to mind were “Bovine Boulevard” and “Woman vs. Cow”. We’ll have voting on the final 5 tomorrow.
