Sometimes, as serious adults, we miss the joy to be found in the simple things. Children are good at showing us what we’re missing. A great shot of some Amish kids, back when snow meant fun, not hassle.
Serving the Amish author Jim Cates today shares the story of an Amish woman named Anne, and a special, unexpected exchange they shared during a visit at a rehabilitation facility. They Shall Speak in Unknown Tongues Both Amish and African-American sermons offer the congregant a message focused on God. Both also ask for a witness. Beyond these similarities, they don’t just drift apart. They separate at…
Gloria Yoder is an Amish mother from Illinois who writes the Amish Cook column (previously penned by Lovina Eicher). Gloria was recently asked by a reader “What five things do you enjoy the most about the Amish way of life?”, and in this week’s column, she answers. Gloria starts with a couple of important disclaimers: First, I will insert that there really are more different…
Do you believe in miracles? Ohio Amish church member Rebecca Miller describes the following dramatic story as “a true happening here in the community.” She notes that “I took the liberty to change names to protect identity and took a writer’s liberties to add minute details to get a better story line. I heard the original event by word of mouth, so I embellished it slightly but…
For a nice account of yesterday’s Forgiveness Conference at Elizabethtown College, try this Lancaster Online article. Highlights included a very good talk and discussion from Duke Divinity school professor L. Gregory Jones (“Forgive and forget” is not exactly helpful advice), a personal account from Charles Roberts’ mother Terri (whose first reaction on hearing of the shootings was fear her son might have tried to intervene…
A few snowy shots shared by a reader visiting the Adams County, IN (Berne) Amish community. Local old timers describe this as an “old time winter”, like in the 1960s and 70s. There have been shortages of coal, with one area business apparently running out, and another limiting purchases. Weather like this may have some heading to Joe’s. Joe’s Lighting Products in Monroe carries batteries,…

Milking time
(This is not such an odd occurrence. I have stood on the road many times when it was time to bring the cows home for milking, or when it was time to move the cows from one pasture to another. The road watcher has to make sure that cars are aware of the cows coming down the road AND that none of them make a break and run).

Grazy Cross Country Steakout
If I can get my thoughts cow-lected that I herd through the bo-vine, we cud chew the cud. These cows are not quite the moo-dy Whole-stains; they look like Belted Galloway cattle, also known as Oreo Cookie Cows. They aren’t from Mos-cow or Moo-ssouri, but they are de-calfinated. It’s amoosing that their horns don’t work, and they have nowhere to hide. No whey are they going to the mooovies. Some people pasture-eyes the milk. The steaks are high for the stock-holders. Butter not be the laughing stock, but it gives udder delight to milk it for what it’s worth. Got milk?
This one really made me laugh this morning. Moo-velous, Linda.
Final 5 voting tomorrow
