Amish Country Music Video?
So here’s a different spin on the words “Amish Country”.
Making the news right now is this country music song “Slowly But Surely”, performed by a young Amish couple known simply as “Ben & Rose”.
Now we’ve seen many Amish singing videos before – and even videos of Amish young people performing with instruments.
But this is the first “music video” I’ve seen from an Amish source. It’s essentially a clip of the two performing the song live, paired with a studio recording of “Slowly But Surely” (a cover of a country classic).
This couple definitely has an Old Order Amish appearance – and that’s how they are described in the article by savingcountrymusic.com:
But it’s not every day you see an Old Order Amish couple gaining traction. This isn’t the semi-Amish or Mennonite order we’re talking about here. This is the horse-and-buggy of the Amish faith. Their strict codes generally forbid them from things like the internet.
But one young couple simply known as Ben & Rose decided they wanted to record a version of the classic country song “Slowly But Surely,” joining the ranks of Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens, and Rhonda Vincent and Daryle Singletary.
How did this recording come about? A local singer/songwriter named Conrad Fisher helped make it happen.
Born and raised in a Mennonite household himself—and regularly hosting performances with Amish/Mennonite performers—Fisher seemed like the perfect intermediary to trust with recording a song for Ben & Rose.
So the singing couple had their brother drive them to Ragamuffin Hall, and Conrad produced “Slowly But Surely” for them like he would any other country song.
You’ll see they have the appearance of “modern” young Lancaster County Old Order Amish, though the video was produced in a studio in Juniata County in central PA. It’s possible they may be from a Lancaster-related settlement.
Ben & Rose apparently didn’t plan to release a video, but later put one together based on a quick performance recording:
When they were done, Conrad Fisher convinced the two to make a quick video for the song, if only for themselves. But at some point, they Ben & Rose decided to upload the video on YouTube, and it’s since found strong reception.
Many Amish people tend to be partial to country music. This is quite a nice little ditty. What do you think?
Slowly But Surely
Rose sounds a lot like a young Dolly Parton!
Sweet song rendition!
Slowly but Surely
I thought, yes, sounded like Dolly Parton.
slowly but surely
The couple sings so beautiful. I had to listen to them sing more than once. Such a beautiful love song. They both have beautiful voice.. I read a lot about the Amish. I didn’t know they played instruments. I loved to hear them sing. I hope they’re a couple because they looked like they were.
Agree, very beautiful voices, and very “country”.
As far as instruments, it’s not especially common on the whole – but common enough among younger Amish in these more progressive circles. The harmonica is a more traditional instrument that some older Amish adults would even play in this community.
Surly but slowly
Ben & Rose sounded wonderful singing together. I really enjoyed listening to the video. Thank you for sharing.
Wow!
I subscribed to their Youtube and also another channel where I found Rose singing with others, called Third Fret Harmony. They have wonderful voices! An Amish store I go to locally each week has a young lady who works there and she spends her day singing hymns as she works, I always enjoy going in and listening to her and told her to never stop singing! They get plenty of practice, that’s for sure! I think it’s nice that they are sharing their talent with everyone! Hope the elders don’t get mad at them for it.
They are from Lancaster County
I know this couple. They are from Lancaster County. Rose played at the Corner Coffee Shop right in downtown Intercourse across from Kitchen Kettle back a year or so ago. She played on a weekend night for a couple of hours with her sister. They were a duet at the time. I have a short video of her singing with her sister. The coffee shop brings in amateur talent every Friday and Saturday night and they get exposure and play for tips. They were accompanied by old order Amish men, I think a brother, and came and left with all their sound equipment by van. I was so shocked at the time but the audience is filled every weekend with Amish no matter who us playing. Rose must have married since my video since her husband has a beard!
Great, thanks for this additional info Lisa. Sounds like a great one to catch live!
Nice
Old school country blues. Ready for the grand old opry.
New Amish videos
Check out this video of our friends the Brandenberger family, Amish of northern Indiana – they have a large series of such vids and are a charming group in every way. I’m sure the dad/leader of the band, Victor, would be happy to talk to you about the development of the family music that includes gospel, bluegrass, country and folk offerings.

They did a great job. Very catchy tune.
Ben and Rose
I absolutely love them! Love their song “Slowly But Surely”. Hope to hear more from them!!
Just Awesome
Wonderful song. Beautiful harmony. Excellent! Keep the songs coming.
It’s great that they sing together, and made a video. I feel that music is a gift and should be used to glorify Him to all.
Love It.
I love this video. This song is excellent. I especially love the Amish couple singing it. Nice surprise. She is more open than he is. You can tell he is shy. lol. They are a cute couple.
Thank you for sharing this.
Good observation, that does come through. Great catchy rendition isn’t it.
Audio mix
Very nice singing. I think the steel guitar overdub is a bit over the top as well as too much in front of the vocals. For my taste, it should be replaced by an acoustic guitar solo that is simpler and more in character with the excellent vocals.
Song
Wow, that was amazing!
Slowly But Surely
Great voices. Great song. Ben seems to be sporting a moustache and Rose’s bare legs show under her rather short dress. Is this typical of Old Order Amish in PA? It doesn’t detract from their obvious talent, but I was curious.
Sometimes they let a bit of a five-o-clock shadow show through, and dresses can be shorter in some places and with younger people.
Wonderful Voices
How refreshing to watch and listen to Ben & Rose, a beautiful rendition of a Merle Haggard classic,
Thank you
