New Ben & Rose Song: “If Teardrops Were Pennies” (Amish Country Music)

Amish Country Music Couple Ben & Rose are back with a fresh new release, their first since last month’s “Would You Like To Buy Some Flowers“. This one is called “If Teardrops Were Pennies” (video at end of post).

This is another tune, like “Circle of Love“, previously recorded by Dolly Parton. This one was written by Carl and Pearl Butler. The video description tells us that “It was first a country hit for Carl Smith in 1951, and for Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton in 1971.”

The video for this one has a bit of a twist, with the couple performing outside Ragamuffin Hall – the studio where the couple records, housed in a church building dating to 1871.

Looks like it was a bit of a breezy day while they were recording. We get some nice drone shots showing the beautiful central PA setting as well.

The song is a short but catchy one. That noted, I would say the visuals of the video – overcast skies, and not much smiling from either Ben or Rose –  provide a downcast feel in contrast to the upbeat feel of the music itself.

And I’d say the visual mood the couple evokes here aligns with the message of the song, about heartache – which you understand when you read the lyrics:

An acre of diamonds I’d offer to you
A solid gold mansion, an airplane or two
This whole world would be yours to have and to hold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold

If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold
I’d have all the riches my pockets would hold
I’d be, oh, so wealthy with treasures untold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold

The tears that have fallen won’t buy you a thing
The heartaches you’ve caused me won’t pay for a ring
The love that I wanted would not have grown cold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold

If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold
I’d have all the riches my pockets would hold
I’d be, oh, so wealthy with treasures untold
If teardrops were pennies and heartaches were gold

But teardrops aren’t pennies
And heartaches aren’t gold

If you’re new to this, yes, Ben and Rose are an Amish couple – from Lancaster County – who have been recording and releasing music with the aid of singer/songwriter Conrad Fisher, proprietor of Ragamuffin Hall. On a previous post, reader Lisa shared comments on the musical duo, including:

I know this couple. They are from Lancaster County. Rose played at the Corner Coffee Shop right in downtown Intercourse across from Kitchen Kettle back a year or so ago. She played on a weekend night for a couple of hours with her sister. They were a duet at the time.

The first song released on Ben & Rose’s channel, “Slowly But Surely“, has really taken off. At the time of writing it has been viewed over 1.2 million times on YouTube.

I’m not sure about how to support but I’m sure they appreciate if you listen and even share with people who might like it. Here is their channel – https://www.youtube.com/@BenRose-music

There is one other song that is listed on another channel – https://amishamerica.com/new-song-ben-and-rose-amish-country-music-would-you-like-to-buy-some-flowers/
