A Visit to Amish Indiana in 25 Photos

A Visit to Amish Indiana in 25 Photos

Since getting back from northern Indiana Monday night, I’ve been thinking about ways to share my trip with you. I usually return from these Amish journeys with a jumble of thoughts and photos…some of them become posts and some just sort of evaporate. In the interest of capturing as much of that as possible, I thought I’d just share a bunch of photos I took,…

Amish Ice Kiosk

Amish Ice Kiosk

This ice kiosk is located just south of Shipshewana, Indiana. The person who shares it explains that “it’s fully automated, takes bills and dispenses ice in bags or bulk.” Though some Amish use ice houses, Amish in this northern Indiana community permit home refrigerators and freezers such as those made by companies like Crystal Cold of Arcola, Illinois, or Shipshewana-area E-Z Freeze. Update: Not all Amish…

Amish Stove Shop

Amish Stove Shop

This is technically a repair shop (Mullet’s Repair Shop in northern Indiana) but they make a popular stove used by Amish.  The reader who sent these photos in notes that Mullet’s Repair “are the makers of the Mullet Coal Stove which is without a doubt the most commonly used stove in the community.”  The Mullet Coal Stove brochure: Inside you’ll find technical and safety info. The…

Hit-and-run driver accused of intentionally killing Amish horse

Over the past weekend a driver apparently purposely drove his car into a horse pulling a buggy full of Nappanee, Indiana -area Amish teenagers. Francisco Gonzalez was captured on a Wal-Mart parking lot camera turning around and returning to the road to run into the buggy horse, which was killed instantly.  The boys were shaken but unhurt; what the driver left behind was described as…

What is this buggy doing in Adams County, Indiana?

This one has been fun to ponder.  The above is not something you’re supposed to see in Swiss Amish communities like those of Adams County or Allen County, Indiana.  The Swiss Amish churches are known for a number of characteristic practices, including using only open carriages.  This photo was taken in the Adams County settlement not too far from Berne.  So what is going on? A…

10 views of Nappanee, Indiana

Today we have the latest installment in our regular 10 views feature. I took these photos last summer while in the Nappanee, Indiana Amish community. The town of Nappanee is at the center of a large Amish community of around 5,000 people, which stretches over 4 northern Indiana counties: Kosciusko, Elkhart, Marshall, and St. Joseph.  Founded in the early 1840s, this community is one of…

Amish child buggy drivers: Indiana lawmakers’ response

The WANE news channel has aired a second report, of Indiana politicians discussing the Amish child buggy driver issue (video no longer available). The station interviewed 2 Hoosier state lawmakers. One seems a little flustered by the issue, as if he’d like to do something but can’t for reasons like religious rights. The second says that he doesn’t think “the age factor has that much…

Should 10-year-old Amish buggy drivers get off the road?

Is this the next road battle for the Amish?  A local news station did an investigative piece on young Amish drivers in Indiana (the Swiss Amish settlements in Allen and Adams Counties).  They discovered children aged 12, 11, and even 10 driving horse-drawn vehicles. If you’ve spent time in Amish communities, that shouldn’t come as a big shock.  Amish children learn to drive horse-drawn vehicles…

10 views of the Adams County, Indiana Amish

We haven’t done one of these in awhile, so here are ten photos from the Adams County, Indiana Amish settlement. As you can see, it was a fairly grey day, so that didn’t help.  Which do you think came out best? If you enjoyed these, some other photos: 10 views of Lancaster County Amish 10 views of the northern Indiana (Elkhart-Lagrange) Amish 10 views of Allen…
