It’s been awhile since we’ve had a nice photo post. Today reader Frank Trestka shares a set of shots from visits to Holmes County, Ohio. So enjoy some beautiful summer views of one of my favorite Amish communities. These were taken in June. I’ve added my own comments along with a couple of anecdotes from Frank. This might be my favorite shot of the bunch (well…
An Amish-owned barn burned yesterday, in the sizeable St Mary’s County community in southern Maryland. Fifty-eight local firefighters were aided by 50 to 70 Amish in putting out the blaze. What’s remarkable is the explosion that is caught in this video, when a fuel tank in the structure ignited. You can see the massive explosion about eight seconds in, along with footage of the men scattering away…
File this one under “Not A Spoof”. Chad Adams, a police sergeant for Pulaski Township in Western PA, recently spent time walking local roads dressed as an Amish woman. Why would he do such a thing, you’re surely wondering?  The department was trying to catch a man who had been exposing himself to Amish children walking home from school.  Adams was accompanied by a female officer…
I missed this odd story when it appeared in late August. Someone is stealing hemp plants from two Amish farmers in Chester County (part of the greater Lancaster County settlement). I wasn’t even aware Amish were growing hemp, which is used to make a wide array of products including clothing, rope, insulation, plastics, and biofuel. And there is a reason – this is all quite…
This past Monday, Amish at Ethridge, Tennessee were victims of a pair of armed robberies. In both cases a truck was used to block the road, and an armed individual emerged to demand money. The assailants even shot at one Amish buggy as it fled. The good news is that authorities have captured three suspects. It sounds like, for their trouble and likely impending prison sentences, the trio acquired a grand…
I’ve just gotten back from Lancaster County after what felt like 2 days in the car driving home yesterday (trucks can be bumpy on highways). I’m going to catch up on comments now and will be sharing more as I settle back into English America for a couple days here before the next trip begins. This photo of a friend of mine was taken a…

Sure Erik, will post the tomato pie as soon as I have a few minutes…
I never thought about it, but I wonder how Amish and Mennonites in Canada, particularly the Old Order types, observe what we call “May 2-4” a long weekend holiday that commemorates the birthday of the Queen of England at the time of Canadian Confederation. Queen Victoria. Perhaps they do it quietly, or enjoy the long weekend without acknowledging worldly/English observation. We have fireworks that weekend. What do you think?
