The Amish in Kentucky: 2023 Guide (50+ Communities)

Kentucky is home to a sizeable and growing Amish population. As of 2023, over 15,000 Amish live in 50+ locations across the state.

This is remarkable as Amish did not arrive to the Bluegrass State until the mid-20th century. Since then, the Amish population has skyrocketed to become the 8th-largest in North America.

Kentucky Amish Communities:

  • Munfordville/Horse Cave -The Munfordville community in Hart County is the largest in Kentucky, and one of the fastest-growing in the nation.
  • Hopkinsville (Christian/Trigg County) – The state’s second largest Amish group is found at Hopkinsville in Christian & Trigg Counties, with over 2,000 Amish.
  • Guthrie – The area near Guthrie in southern Kentucky is home to a small “electric New Order” group.
  • Other KY Amish Settlements – Kentucky is dotted with small Amish communities. Amish people can be found in nearly three dozen of the state’s counties.

Munfordville/Horse Cave (Hart County)

The Amish settlement in Hart County, found near the towns of Munfordville and Horse Cave, was started in 1989. This community has ties with the Geauga County Amish settlement in Ohio. The Munfordville settlement has grown rapidly over the past two decades, and numbered 20 church districts as of 2023 (about 2,400 people).

The Munfordville settlement has benefited from a high level of in-migration of Amish from other communities, including its large parent settlement of Geauga County (note: though Munfordville is used to describe this community, there are no Amish actually in the town, it simply refers to one of the most common mailing addresses for area Amish).

Amish at the Hart County produce auction

Like in other communities, Amish at Munfordville operate small businesses and also do some farming. The hilly terrain is not the best farmland, but Amish do operate traditional farms as well as grow produce. The local produce auction runs on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 12 noon.

A number of shops, including furniture businesses and retail stores provide ways of making a living for the Amish (more on Kentucky Amish furniture). Detweiler’s Country Store, near Cub Run, is a well-known variety store with gardening amenities, books, foods, and dry goods. Amish-run sawmills and stores such as fabric shops can be found dotted among the Hart County hills as well.

Traveling in Hart County by buggy can be hazardous. Like the Amish community at Holmes County, Ohio, Hart County is hilly. In some places you will find buggy pull-off lanes, usually on steep hills, which provide a shoulder for buggies to pull over and allow vehicles traveling behind to pass. Read more on the Munfordville, KY Amish.

Christian/Trigg County (Hopkinsville)

Christian County is home to two Amish settlements: the second-oldest in the state, near Crofton (founded 1972, three church districts), and a newer and larger settlement near Hopkinsville and Pembroke (1989, at 15 districts the state’s second-largest). The Hopkinsville community has grown rapidly over the past 10+ years, doubling in size and nearly surpassing the state’s largest community at Munfordville. The Amish living in this settlement are also found in neighboring Trigg County.

The group at Crofton is an electric New Order settlement, of similar size to that at Guthrie in neighboring Todd County (see Guthrie Amish above). Christian County, along with Todd County, is also home to a community of Old Order Mennonites, a group which resembles the Amish in many ways, including its use of horse-drawn travel and plain clothing. Todd County hosts a sizeable produce auction (Fairview, at Elkton) where both Amish and Mennonites sell their fruits and vegetables.

Guthrie

The lands near Guthrie in Todd County are home to an unusual community of “electric” New Order Amish. New Order Amish on the whole make up only a small minority within Amish society.

Though they dress plain, use the horse-and-buggy, and speak Pennsylvania Dutch, New Order Amish in general differ somewhat from Old Order Amish. New Order Amish tend to have a greater focus on missions and outreach, are generally liberal on technology, believe in assurance of salvation. Some groups also hold Sunday School.

New Order Amish are themselves divided into two groups: “electric” and “non-electric”. Electric New Order Amish differ from non-electric New Orders in that they permit electricity to be used in the home.

kentucky amish tractor guthrie
Amish at Guthrie, Kentucky make extensive use of tractors

The Amish at Guthrie are also very progressive when it comes to tractor usage. Tractors are driven on the road; most Amish homes can be identified by the bright blue or red tractor parked outside. Buggy usage is limited compared to other Amish settlements. As a result, Guthrie homes are more spread out than one might expect for a settlement of this size.

The Guthrie community is the oldest in Kentucky, founded in 1958. Today it numbers just two church districts in size, and approximately 300 people. The Amish here originate from a now-defunct Amish church at Stuarts Draft, Virginia (GC Waldrep, “The New Order Amish and Para-Amish Groups”, Mennonite Quarterly Review July 2008 p. 399). This Amish group maintain ties with other similar communities, such as the electric New Order Amish church at Union Grove in North Carolina.

Other Kentucky Amish communities

Numerous other Amish settlements are found across Kentucky – some very small with just a handful of households, others numbering hundreds of Amish residents. Among the noteworthy ones, Marion in Crittenden County is home to the third-oldest Kentucky Amish settlement, founded in 1977 and with four church districts today (approximately 450 people).

In addition to Guthrie and Crofton, a third, smaller electric New Order settlement can be found at Princeton in Caldwell County. This particular Amish subgroup has found Kentucky a welcoming state.

On the other end of the spectrum, Kentucky is also home to several ultraconservative Swartzentruber Amish settlements, one found in Hardin County near Sonora, and a second in Graves County near Mayfield.

A number of Kentucky counties are host to multiple Amish communities. Barren County is home to a pair of settlements founded in the 1980s, each with over 400 Amish residents, and a third community dating to 2014. Bath County also has three communities, including the Swiss Amish settlement at Owingsville (“Swiss” Amish communities have a distinct background and customs as compared to the majority “Pennsylvania Dutch” Amish).

Other Kentucky counties with multiple Amish settlements include Grayson, Henry, Lincoln, Logan, Fleming, Casey, and Breckinridge Counties. For a full list of Kentucky communities, check the 2023 Amish State & County Settlement list.

Amish in KY: A growing & diverse population

Kentucky is a state which has rapidly drawn new Amish settlement over the past 50 years. In fact, all of today’s Kentucky Amish settlements, except for two, have been founded during the last half century.

The Bluegrass State’s attractive location, lying adjacent to Amish-heavy states like Ohio and Indiana, and its relatively low land prices have led large numbers of Amish to settle within its borders.

A phone “shanty” at the end of the lane provides Amish telephone access while keeping the technology from disturbing the rhythms of family life. Hillsboro, Kentucky

According to the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies, Kentucky has been among the fastest-growing states with Amish populations of significant size.

In fact, the Kentucky Amish population has nearly doubled since 2010, a rate which significantly outpaces the typical natural Amish growth rate. This is in large part due to high in-migration, which has continued at a high rate in recent years. And with its wide range of affiliations, from the most conservative to most progressive, Kentucky is a state which showcases the diversity of Amish society.

Kentucky Amish Grocery Store

In the video below, you will see the inside of a typical low-tech Amish grocery store. This is a “bent and dent” store, also known as a salvage grocery, in the Amish community at Hillsboro, Kentucky. These stores carry products with damaged packaging, or which are past their “Best by” dates.

This is a popular type of Amish-run business which attracts both Amish and non-Amish customers. The Amishman who runs the store explains how the business works and also some other interesting details, including how the shop gets its lighting.

Kentucky Amish Home

The video below gives you a look inside an Amish home in the Hillsboro, Kentucky Amish community. The Amish in this settlement are in some ways among the more conservative (e.g., lacking indoor plumbing), although they have been accepting technological change in recent years.

Along with the main home, we also see inside a dawdihaus, which is a smaller home built on an Amish property where traditionally the grandparents will live after transitioning away from full-time farming. All photos in this video by Tim Harris.

          Crab Orchard KY amish stores

Most of the Amish in the Crab Orchard area are open like 9-6. I shop at Yoders a lot and really like it. They are really friendly people and they have a large variety. There is also another store called Kountry Kitchen. You go on down from Yoders and make a left at the little church on the corner and go about 3 miles or so and the store is on the right. You will see signs.

      looking for a furniture craftsman

I am trying to find someone who could make four oak seats for my diningroom chairs. The chair design is so that the seat is a separate piece not joined with the back of the chair. Any help would be appreciated. The seats are simple in design but it seems it’s the “dishing” out of the seat that many don’t know how to do.

        Chair Maker

Not sure if you are interested in chair makers outside KY. I know of a great one in Chambersburg PA – Brownsville Chair Shop – Laban Myers – phone: 717-375-4666. Email I believe is MJOB@verizon.net. He isn’t Amish – is Mennonite.

    3. Furniture craftsman

Try Titus Hoover on South Fork Church Road in Liberty, KY. He can do just about anything with furniture (he refurbished an old screen door for us and he custom builds things, too). Call Sunny Valley Country Store at 606-787-5946 and they can give you Titus’ number/specific address. If you haven’t been, Liberty, KY is within 90 minutes of Lexington and is in south-central Kentucky. Another place that might be able to help (in terms of directing you to craftsmen) is South Fork Furniture on South Fork Creek in Liberty (adjacent to Sunny Valley and other businesses). They work with many Ohio Amish furniture makers. Good luck!

    4. Phone number

Titus Hoover’s number is 606-787-1404 at Scenic View Woodworking on South Fork Church Road/Ridge, just about a mile past Homestead Greenhouses. It makes a great day trip with lots to do (and within 90 miles/minutes of Lexington region). Check out http://www.GROWCaseyCounty.blogspot.com for more info and updates throughout the year (or “GROW Casey County” on Facebook).

      Best wishes, Catherine

If you are interested in Cedar furniture, Simon Beachy near Marion, KY, produces wonderful custom items. I do not have a number, but he’s located on Auut Jane Tabernacle Road. From Marion take KY 91 North toward the Cave-In-Rock Ferry. About 9 miles out you’ll pass an Amish store on your left. Go about amother mile and look for the sign on your left. His shop is about a mile or two off KY 91.

I was driving from Cave City to Munfordville on 31 W yesterday and stopped at a little place called J and J Country Shop or something of the sort. It’s almost like a little consignment shop. They have Amish clothes, toys, shoes, books, all sorts of things. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re in the area

Would love to know exactly where this J and J consignment store is. I love shopping that way.

      1. Auctions in Casey County

        Hi Michael,

Check the GROW CASEY COUNTY website throughout the year (www.GROWCaseyCounty.blogspot.com) for the Casey County Produce Auction sale and related consignment auctions. The former is produce, plants and related ag products throughout the season, beginning now (complete schedule at http://growcaseycounty.blogspot.com/p/casey-co-produce-auction-schedule.html) and through mid-October when they will have their next consignment auction.

Traditionally, the 501/127 Consignment sale/benefit auctions in Casey County are held the last Saturday in March and the last Saturday in October. Now the Casey County Consignment Auction is also doing the same in mid-March and mid-October so there are two in those months.

Also, the 3rd Annual Haiti Benefit Auction will be April 27/28 of this month at the AG/EXPO Center just south of Liberty, KY on Hwy 127.

I hope this is helpful and that you will visit Casey County in your travels!

      Amish near Louisville??

Does anyone know of any amish communities near Louisville, KY?
      Thanks!

      1. Al in Ky.

Marc — There are several Amish communities within about a one
hour drive from Louisville. Here are some roads to travel on to find Amish stores, produce stands, etc.

Irvington, Ky — US 60 west of Irvington
        Willisburg, Ky — Chaplin Road
Sonora, Ky. (Swartzentruber) — Upton-Sonora Road
Campbellsburg, Ky — Turners Station area
Rosebud, In. (New Order) — SW Washington School Rd.
Salem, In. — New Philadelphia area
Paoli, In.– CR 500 E, and Lynd School Road
Orleans, In (Swartzentruber) — CR 100 E and CR 200W

All are interesting in their own way, but I would recommend
Irvington, Ky., and Paoli and Orleans, In.

In addition to these, there are several more within a two
hour drive of Louisville. Two I would recommend: Daviess Co. Indiana and Munfordville, Ky.

        1. Marc

          Amish Sawmill?

In particular, I’m looking for a community near Louisville that has a sawmill (hopefully cedar :-).

          1. Al in Ky.

I would suggest going to the Paoli and Orleans settlements.
There are several sawmills in each. Go to the produce stand
at 700 N. Lynd Road east of Paoli and ask for directions to
the sawmills in that settlement. Also go to the sawmill about
2 miles north of the intersection of CR 700 N and CR 200W
west of Orleans. If a specific sawmill doesn’t have cedar, I’m
sure they’ll tell you where there is one. You may have to special
            order cedar.

        2. Emily

          Henry County/Turner's Station Amish?

          Hi Al,

I see you mentioned Amish in Henry County. Do you have any idea to which group they are affiliated (OO, Swartzentruber, etc.)? I have family in that area and was curious to know who settled that area.

          Thanks!

          1. Al in Ky.

Emily — They are Old Order Amish and if I am correct, I think have roots with the Swiss Amish in northeastern Indiana in Jay and Adams counties. The buggies I’ve seen in Henry County are of the open buggy type. Anyone else have further information?

            1. Emily

              Amish in Henry County

Thanks, Al! That is interesting that they are Swiss Amish. I live in Michigan, not terribly far from the Swiss Amish settlements here and in northeast IN.

A few days after I posted above, I found a census study out of University of Cincy about OO population growth and settlements, and the Henry County group was noted in that study. Not sure of the size of the community, but they seem to have settled in the area between the 2000 and 2010 census. Interestingly, that is not exactly the cheapest land out there anymore, so I’m curious why they picked Turners Station and not something a bit off the beaten path (e.g., Pleasureville). I know there are established groups in the area that are focused on small farm food production (and Wendell Berry’s farm is not too far from there). Must have been some sort of draw for them to be there.

Many thanks again for your thoughts. I am going to be traveling down there for a visit in a few weeks and am anxious to take a peek around town!

        3. Jessica

          reply to Al

I know a handful of the Amish on Sonora-Upton Rd in Hardin County. All really good people, a few in particular will not talk to you, then there are a few who are VERY nice. Sell eggs, bread, veggies, and if you know them well enough butter, ice cream, meats…I miss that area!

I am not sure exactly where you are in northern KY, but given you are in northern KY you are a short drive to many Amish settlements and only about a 3-4 hour drive to Holmes county Ohio. There is also a community in Flemingsburg KY, however I have never been to that particular settlement but it may be worth checking out and should be within a hour or so from northern KY

Needing work done by the Amish

I’m needing some work done by the Amish. Does anyone know how i can get intouch or vist? My loction is burksville Ky in Cumberland County.

      Thanks for your time.

      1. Linda

Mary, may I suggest asking Amos Esh of Esh’s Storage Buildings, Phone(270) 864-3381, or Leroy Kauffman of Kauffman Builders, 270-433-6315. Both are in Burkesville, KY, and former New Order Amish.

        1. Rita

Esh's are a hassle to deal with

I purchased my first building from Esh’s and I was pleased, except they did not finish or deliver it by the date they promised. They hit a tree with the gable top, and left it for US to repair.
May 7, I ordered a custom building which was going to be a playhouse, and I was very specific about what I wanted. It was to look exactly like the one on the cover of their brochure. The 2 week delivery date they promised turned into 6 weeks, then when it was delivered, it was NOT what I had ordered. They changed the pitch on the roof from 12-12 to 7-12, thus ruining the gingerbread trim I had crafted for it. They had installed a window shutter….and which it was NOT to have…and they had removed it, and left 6 holes in the front, thinking I might not notice it (THEIR words). It had the wrong door and the one they installed had been laying in a barn for 10 years. I made a mistake of paying them in full, with a promise that they would bring the correct door. They did not show up. If you are looking for a SHED that you really don’t care about and is already built, it MIGHT be okay. Custom orders…no way. I think they saved scrap 2X4’s since the building was already sold. Disappointed, YES. Over almost $2,800.00 dollars and wrong roof pitch, wrong door, 6 holes in the front, 6 weeks, and I’m angry at myself for letting them by with getting paid. You cannot believe anything that Amos Esh says.

          1. David

            Hassle

Amos at Esh’s Buildings…DO NOT buy a custom building from them and do not expect any building to be delivered on time. DO NOT pay them until your building is 100% complete and in place without any problems. Once you pay him, the deal is over, and you are stuck with empty promises. I am so DISAPPOINTED in Amos Esh of Esh’s Buildings LLC

John Miller’s Lewis County Tack Shop in Kentucky is featured in a 2008 article, “Spotlight on business: Lewis County Tack Shop.” Here are some quotes from that article:
“Having been in the tack business for the last 10 years, John’s knowledge of the horse industry goes back to his father, Mose Miller and uncle, Eli Miller. Mose Miller owns Miller’s Wholesale Harness in Columbia, and his uncle, Eli created a line of trail riding saddles under the business name of Miller Saddle, also of Columbia.
Today, John’s brother Eli creates the custom-made, hand tooled trail riding saddles begun by their uncle Eli…
He found a leather splitter at a yard sale in Mount Sterling that had never been used and had a value of $600.
“He said $12 and I paid him real quick,” John said, pleased with the piece of equipment needed to help his business grow.
Lewis County Tack Shop is located at 11410 Salt Lick Road (Kentucky 989) in Burtonville. ”
                http://www.maysville-online.com/lifestyles/spotlight-on-business-lewis-county-tack-shop-riddles-rhymes/article_a0bf38fa-e47f-5b92-9928-2e99c2763c88.html

Eli Miller saddles seem almost legendary. When I googled Miller Saddle Columbia Kentucky, one address that came up was:
                MILLER SADDLE SHOP
                3007 BARNETTS CREEK RD
                COLUMBIA, KY 42728-9141

There may be more than one Eli Miller in Columbia, KY. I don’t know Eli, or if this is the right one, and I don’t know if he wants his address published on the Internet or not!

        Quilting

        Diane,
We live in an Amish community that has several women and their daughters who perform finishing and hand quilting for various customers. One women is Ester Miller and her sister inlaw Martha Miller. I am providing my email so you can send your request.I will to take over to them. Also provide your phone number as they may wish to contact you that way. After living here I understand why the women are sought for their quilting talents. I can sit for hours watching them work on quilts.

Planning a trip to Ky Amish Communities

We are planning a trip this summer to Ky.Would appreciate info on Amish communities in Marion and Munfordville.Anything you may know would be helpful….We normally visit Ethridge Tn and we love it there, but want to expand our trip this year to include Ky.

      1. Linda

        Norma,
        http://www.marionkentucky.org/
has information about the Amish community in Crittenden County or Marion, Kentucky. A map is available of the local Amish area.

        1. Norma Burroughs

          Thanks Linda….
That website is very helpful, especially the map.Seems as if our main concern will be a place to stay, without driving too far out of the area.Unless I missed locating a nearby motel.
          Thanks again!

            Munfordville Amish

I’ve been to the Munfordville settlement many times and always
enjoy my visits there. Suggested places to go:

The heart of the settlement is on either side of Cub Run Highway,
Hwy #88, between Munfordville and Cub Run.

Detweiler Country Store — 12825 Priceville Road
You might stop there first to ask about other places to go.
Detweiler’s is great — several small buildings selling various
products — hardware, bulk food, household goods, etc.

Rocky Top Salvage — 632 E. Gap Hill Road (bent and dent grocery)

            Miller’s Greenhouse and Furniture — 2375 Macon-Kessinger Road

Yoder’s Variety Shoppe — 179 Archie Fryer Rd.
Also ask at Yoder’s about the store that sells D. L. Miller’s
art work (Amish artist). It’s near Yoder’s.

Anna’s Kitchen — ask at Detweiler’s for the address. Sells
jams and jellies retail and wholesale.

Also, if you visit during produce season (roughly between May
and Sept), try to visit on produce auction day at the Hart Co.
Produce Auction. Call 270-524-0005 for the schedule. I think
it’s on Mon., Wed., and Fri. It is Amish-run, with many Amish
            farmers selling produce there.

            1. Norma Burroughs

Wow! Thank you so much for this info! I was hoping someone who has already visited there would have some suggestions.
              Thanks again!

Place to stay near Marion, KY

We have a couple of nice Bed and Breakfast spots in Marion. On the Motel side check the Royal Inn- formerly Tobin’s Tourtel for basic accommodation. They should be listed on the marionkentucky.org site. Also try http://www.the-press.com where some of the BnB spots advertise. If you’d rather have a brand name hotel, try the Hampton Inn at Eddyville, KY, about 20 miles away. You’ll have good access to Marion via US 641. The main Amish community is west of Mattoon, KY, and north of Marion. Check out the Fords Ferry Road area for a scenic drive. There are some stores along KY 91 about 10 miles north of Marion. That also puts you close to the Cave-In-Rock Ferry and nearby state park in Illinois. The Cave-in-Rock State Park has cabins overlooking the river. Hope you enjoy your visit to our part of the world.

            1. Norma Burroughs

Thanks Keith…We are really looking forward to our trip! This info is much appreciated. It is so helpful to have someone that lives in area, suggest places to see and locations.
              Again,many thanks!

      Help Needed

Are there any Amish men/women available who are available (for a fee) to come to my farm to assist me in getting my garden and orchard — and my house in better shape? I am willing to pick up and drive to my home near Midway, KY (even though it’s a Georgetown address). I’m located 10 miles from the KY Horse Park, near Midway.

How would I get in contact with those individuals who can help? (I’ve tried numerous Englische people before, but have had “issues” with integrity!)

      Thank you.

      1. Al in Ky

I read in this week’s Budget newspaper that there is a new
Amish settlement only about three weeks old at Pleasureville,Ky.,
in southern Henry County. I don’t have any addresses or phone
numbers, but Pleasureville is small, so I’m sure someone there
would know where the Amish are living. Also, there is a plain
Mennonite group at Salvisa, Ky., not too far from you. They
did have a couple of stores on Hwy. 147, so you might check there.
Another small settlement is at Willisburg, Ky. If I find out
about any others fairly close, I’ll write another post with that
        information.

        1. Emily

          New Settlement in Pleasureville, KY

Wow, that’s great news, Al. I’ll have to tell my family there about it. Where in the Budget did you read that information? I must have missed it.

Wait…now I realize I haven’t gotten my Budget this past week (I’m still working my way through last week’s Budget)!! Oh no…wonder where it landed. 🙁

          1. Al in Ky

The news about the new Pleasureville community was in the
Willisburg, Ky., letter in the April 17 Budget. I have found
that the Willisburg and Irvington scribes seem to keep up with
the latest news about new settlements in Ky. I think there is
also a new settlement in Liberty, Ky. It may be Swartzentruber
            Amish.

            1. Emily

Oh wow. I don’t get my Budget nearly that quickly in the mail. Mine always arrives a week behind printing. I’m still waiting on the one from the 10th! Do you purchase yours locally, Al?

            2. Linda K Miller

              Swartzentruber

              Al,
There is a new settlement in Liberty, Ky. and they are Swartzentruber from what we understand from our Amish neighbors in Pellyington. They have come and purchased some of the homes vacated by the Mennonites who are leaving the South Fork area and moving to TN. A story about this move was published April 6, 2013 and I read it at http://www.kentucky.com. More families will be arriving soon, I think there are about thirteen families now. So glad that these wonderful farms built by our Mennonite neighbors will not just go to ruin with no one to live on them.

              1. Al in Ky.

Thanks so much for the update. I had wondered what was going to
happen to all of the Old Order Mennonite farms.

        2. Amy

          budget newspaper

Ive seen several references to this publication. How can I get one?

          1. Emily

            Amy,

You can purchase a subscription by calling the number available at this website: http://www.thebudgetnewspaper.com/

They offer a national and local version of the paper. I get both, but really, the national one is the one you want, related to all things Amish. The local paper is seriously just the local English newspaper. Interesting, but not Amish-related.

If you’d like, I can always order just a sample copy to see if you will like it. I think it is very interesting, but it is also very much within-family/insider-knowledge dependent. You might consider getting The Connection (out of Indiana), too. I am going to order a subscription here this week; sounds interesting and only comes once a month (the Budget piles up quickly here as a weekly paper!).

      2. Sicily Farmer

        Help in KY

        Kathleen,
I used to sell produce at Georgetown Tractor Supply a couple of years back. I know some Mennonites in Cynthiana, Kentucky. Would that be okay? I would tell members of my Mennonite church, but we are in Manchester and Lincoln Counties. That is too far away (I am joining Pace’s Creek in late July.) Let me know. I can contact them. How many people do you need and for how long? I’m not for sure if you are the Kathleen that is one of my friends on my FB page or not. I am Amish Author Sicily Yoder on there, but am transitioning to Sicily Farmer this summer.

        1. Sandra Kathleen

Sicily, Thanks for your reply…as you can see, mine’s not so prompt!

Well, I’m not sure now just what I can do: funds are a bit low, and I’ve already gone and done some of the work I’d needed help with.

Nonetheless, since doing quite a bit of thinking..and praying…and studying, I’m thinking I’d like to attend a Mennonite service and see what that community is about. I’ve looked into Anabaptist faith and it appears to “jive” pretty well where my spiritual journey has led me. Is there a Mennonite church near Cynthiana? The closest congregation I’ve found through the church’s website was in Cincinnati.

          Thanks for your assistance…

(I don’t think I’m your friend, Kathleen, as my name is Sandra…but, that doesn’t mean we couldn’t become friends!)

John, we have an Amish friend who is a carpenter with the skills you are talking about for homebuilding and remodeling. He has references and his own shop. Free Cherry Wood

I had a cherry tree cut down last October (2012). It’s about 10-12″ in diameter and at least 10 feet long. There are also 4-5 shorter pieces. There is easy access to it.

Is there anyone who would like to “reap” the wood either for milling or firewood? Or is it something I should just put on my burn pile?…which I’d hate to do.

Easy directions to my place which is off Exit 65 (Midway) of the I-64.

      1. Emily

        Cherry Wood

        Sandra,

If you don’t get any interest here, you can go online to hearth.com and find someone in a flat minute to take the wood. People are always looking for wood to burn in their wood burners! I personally would think someone would want it to mill (cherry is great!), but not sure what is needed to get usable wood for projects from timber.

        Hope that helps.

        1. Sandra Kathleen

          Possible side business??

Thanks, Emily! That really does help.

A note about a possible sideline for anyone interested: to reuse the oak boards replaced by new horse fencing.

My husband (now deceased) would take boards that weren’t flat out rotted or split and plane off the paint residue (both sides),then, made cutting boards, trays, signs, etc. They are beautiful! Talk about getting something for “nothing!”

    33. Amish/Mennonites near Somerset or Tazewell,KY?

I used to live in Somerset,KY and have in-laws in Tazewell,KY.I remember seeing a Mennonite woman in Wal-Mart one time and had to really resist the urge to go up to her and start a conversation in Penn-dutch with her,of course I guess that means I’ve been reading too many books!I’ve always been fascinated with the culture because I grew up in WV close to the OH state line.I was actually born in Summit Co.,OH!We would make a day of it to go see Amish Country in Holmes Co.,OH.I also lived in Somerset(Pulaski Co.,KY)with my now deceased granny.I remember one time their was a news story about some thoughtless English driver that ran a buggy full of either Amish or Mennonite ladies off the road and injured them,I was shocked how cruel some people can be to others just for being different! To this day I still can’t understand why we all can’t just get along!

      Log Home in KY

We are wanting to have the Amish build our log home in Somerset Ky. We have already cleared the land and have had the hole dug for the foundation. We were originally going to buy a log cabin kit and then have someone put it together, but have decided that we may be able to get a real log home built for about the same amount of money. We do have plans from the log cabin kit we were considering or would be open to something similar. We would like to get started as soon as possible. Thank you.

I used to live in Somerset,KY and still have family in the area!Where is the land? That will be a gorgeous home when it’s finished! It’ll be really pretty if it’s in a rural part of Somerset(i.e. off the road or in the woods?)Good luck finding someone to help you build! My granny(God rest her soul)told me about some Amish men that did landscaping where we lived, they fixed the broken sidewalk(if I remember what she said correctly),even though the Housing Authority was supposed to do that!I don’t know if that helps or not,but good luck anyway!

      1. James C

Thanks. We have about 115 acres off the main roads and mostly woods. The house will sit atop the highest point of the property and overlook the valley and hill tops.

We(I lived there for about 10 months also)lived in the Senior Living apartments,I’m disabled and was the only disabled person living there at the time in 2007it was quite the gossip among the people, especially the ones that had Home Health coming to there homes and it got so bad one time i had to tell a woman that I had a mental problem(which is the honest truth!)before she would leave me alone,no kidding!). I also have other relatives that still live there.

      Just Curious

I live in Shepherdsville Ky and was wondering if there are Amish here? I was at Rite-Aid last year and seen 4 Amish (or Mennonite) men. I was so intrigued and wanted to say hi but was afraid they wouldn’t talk to me. They looked extremely “stern”. I was just curious as to if anyone knew of any Amish communities around here.

      1. Al in Ky

Gina — I’m thinking the Amish you saw at Rite Aid may have been
from Sonora. If so, they are from the Swartzentruber Amish group,
which I have found to be more reserved than general Old Order Amish. If you want to meet and talk with some Amish, I have a couple of suggestions: Miller’s Variety and Bulk Food Store on US
60 a few miles west of Irvington, and Miller’s Bulk Food Store in
Willisburg. These would probably be the Amish communities closest to Shepherdsville. I have been to both stores and have found the owners to be friendly. I think they both are used to having customers visit their stores who are interested in learning more about the Amish.

I have written Amish America posts several times in the last few years about Kentucky Amish, so you may want to read my other posts. Just put “Al in Ky” in the search at the top of this page and you’ll be able to pull up my other posts. One that may be helpful is my post from May 22, 2012, where I listed about ten Amish settlements within an hour’s drive of Louisville.

Glad to know about your interest in Amish in Kentucky. The Amish
population and number of communities in Ky. is growing each year!

        1. Gina

Thank you so much for the info!! I will for sure check out your other blogs! I’ve lived here most of my life and have never seen Amish around here except for that day. Maybe they were here working and just stopped in that day? My aunt lives on Nolin Lake and every time I go visit her (I usually take the Sonora exit) I see buggy crossing signs and have always been intrigued. I’m a stay at home mom and in the past 2 years I have gotten more intrigued with all the different Amish shows on TV. “Breaking Amish” “Amish mafia” etc. I’m going to to try to talk my husband and kids into taking a day and going to visit some Amish shops. Again, thank you for the information and for responding to me!!

          1. Al in Ky

If you want to go on a one-day trip not too farm from Shepherdsville, I’d suggest going to Irvington. I was last there about two years ago and at that time, there were several Amish stores (country variety store, salvage grocery, bakery, lumber yard). Before you go, you may want to call Miller-Mart Country Store at 10285 E. Hwy 60, phone 270-547-2000, just to make sure they’re open. Call a couple of days ahead of time. I’ve been suprised more than once through the years when I’ve traveled to visit an Amish store and found it closed for the day for various reasons (a wedding, a funeral, a religious holiday,etc.).

            1. Gina

Thank you Al in Ky! I will for sure give them a call a couple days before we go! You’ve been a great help! 🙂

              Amish un-reality television

I’m not in the core of this conversation, and yet I would agree with you, howard w. moore, but some people like watching tv and are not judgmental about the shows content, some people are though. It’s a form of entertainment, right or wrong, and people are allowed to watch what they like. I for one think that catastrophe shows like Amish Mafia has one thing going for them, they get people curious about actual Amish life and gets people to seek out the truth, by trying to ask questions of the Amish and the communities in which they live, and start to visit informative websites like Amish America.
Welcome to the site by the way.

                Amish un-reality television

True, Well said brother. Having went to school with some Mennonites I was at least some what conditioned to the Amish ways. I used to stop at an Amish road side stand to see if she had fried pies 🙂 BBC did a story on Amish life. I found it very educational. Loving family and I applaud them for making the film

                  BBC documentary

                  Is it this documentary? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtNXvE_rLoE

We looooooved that one a lot around here. Probably watch it every couple of months or so. The family is so sweet and the documentarians did a lovely job with highlighting many aspects of Amish life. The music itself is worth a watch…I am in love with several of the songs in there!

      Amish Farm for Sale

      Hi everyone,

There is an Amish farm up for sale in the Turners Station settlement. I just contacted the friend that posted this listing to see which family it is. I think it is the Troyers (famous in our minds for their sticky buns and leather goods). Not sure if there is anything in particular going on in the settlement, or the family is just moving on to greener pastures.

My dad, who owns a farm just down the road, said they are doing a for sale by owner. Hopefully they sell quickly and near the price they are asking.

      Amish Builder

I am looking for an Amish builder to build a house in the Crab Orchard area. I would like to build a log cabin but will also consider stick built if I cannot find some experienced in building log cabins.

      Amish in my area?

I live in the Smiths Grove area, I know there is Amish in the area, but not sure where. I am trying to find a variety type store as well as a bulk foods store. I need material and thread as well want to shop for food. I see buggies in town occasionally and I see signs near by. Just want to know what is in my area. I am in Edmonson County/Warren/ Barren area.

      1. Amish in Barren & Warren County, Kentucky

There are Amish in the Smith’s Grove area, looks like there are 3 congregations there, so that could be anywhere from about 50-60 to 100 households.

They may also be in the vicinity of Park City, or in the mailing address zone of Park City, if that is of any help.

Take a drive and look for signs of businesses, it doesn’t sound like you are too far off. With a little asking you should be able to find out if there is a variety/foods store. In a community that size, there is a decent chance there is something Amish-run.

Here are some roads to travel on, where Amish live in the Smith’s
Grove area. As Erik says, ask around. If you see a sign for
anything for sale (eggs, honey, maple syrup, firewood, etc.), just
stop in and ask if there are any variety stores, bulk food stores,
etc. in the settlement. Hope this helps!

      Hi Beverly,

I’m really sorry to hear about your fire. My parents live in LaGrange as well (I also grew up there), so your posting sparked my interest.

I know there are Amish in Henry County that do construction work. I’m not sure if they would travel down to OC, but it’s possible. They are in the Campbellsburg area. I know my dad is working with one family right now to get a barn lean-to put up. However, I will tell you that he’s been working with them for close to a year and there has yet to be a stick put up on the farm (their farm is in Turners Station).

If you’d like the name of the person with whom my dad is working, I can find that out for you. Also, there are Amish in Hardin County that might be close enough to do something. However, I believe they are all Swartzentruber there, so I’m not sure if they are open enough to do work that far away from home. Al in KY (who has commented above), might have some ideas about the Hardin County group. I haven’t visited that settlement before…only read about them.

Good luck on your reconstruction work!

        Getting Good Help

I can tell you first hand not to put a lot of faith in getting good help from some of the Amish in southern Ky. They have bad habits about taking down barns and leaving all the junk laying around and then disappearing. They done it to my dad and a neighbor of ours and left them hanging with piles of wood and nails and junk laying all over. The mess was supposed to be picked up but they didn’t

      Crab Orchard Amish Auction 2014

I am looking to find information on the Amish auction held near or in Crab Orchard Kentucky. I wanted to know when it was being held in 2014 and the rules of consignment. I am particularly interested in the one held in the Spring of 2014. I believe it is March but I do not know the exact dates. If you could send me an email at tinajones8165@gmail.com or reply to this message with information or a phone number it will be greatly appreciated.

      1. Linda

Tina, hopefully you received information in time for the March 15, 2014, Crab Orchard auction. The Crab Orchard auction on the third Saturday in March raises funds for the produce auction facility expenses or for a hospital fund. On the first Saturday of November, consignments benefit the school. For the future, the produce auction has a recording at 606-355-0030.

Thanks, Linda, for this information. I’ve gone to the Hart County auction several times and will be there again this year. I see it’s been moved to the Hart County Fairgrounds this year. It was getting kind of crowded at the Amish produce auction building where it had been the past few years.
