    “Pennsylvania Dutch” versus “Amish”

    ByErik Wesner July 6, 2007July 6, 2024

In places like the heavily-touristed areas of Lancaster County you see “Pennsylvania Dutch” (or just “Dutch” for short), or “Amish” attached to just about anything with something to sell. To take a few examples: “Jakey’s Amish BBQ”, “Amish Paradise Homestays”, “Dutch Delights”, etc. This naturally makes visitors assume that the Amish must have something to do with the Pennsylvania Dutch. But are they the same…

Odds and ends from Lancaster County

    Byerik June 28, 2007January 17, 2011

A couple quick observations from Lancaster County: I recalled today how Amish usually try to switch to English whenever English people are around.  I was talking to an Amish guy today and one of his friends walked up to ask for help working on the school playground.  Obviously the most comfortable tongue would be PA Dutch, but, seeing I was there, he chose to speak…

New Order supper and a different sort of haystack

    Byerik June 25, 2007February 13, 2011

I had a chance to catch up with a couple more friends the Thursday before last–‘Martin’, a minister of the New Order Amish persuasion, his wife, ‘Annie’, and their neat kids. My timing was perfect–suppertime!  A grinning Martin plunked me down in front of a ‘haystack’–a potato-lettuce-chili-cheese- crumbled nachos concoction Annie had just prepared.  Yum.  (Yeah, I definitely had seconds). As we dug into our…

Swartzentruber Amish Homes in Holmes County, Ohio

    ByErik Wesner June 21, 2007September 27, 2024

The homes of the Swartzentruber Amish and similar groups tend to be among the plainest.  Metal roofs and dirt lanes are characteristic. Usually Swartzentruber yards are a bit scrabbly-looking compared to the typical meticulously-cared-for Old Order front lawn.  This may reflect a difference in concern for the material world. While many Old Order Amish will work out on construction crews and in factories, Swartzentrubers tend…

    “The guy with the beard”

Day Two in Holmes County was a great one.  I had a chance to catch up with a lot of Amish friends and acquaintances. I sat for an hour and a half having a nice chat with one friend, ‘Johnnie’, who just had his fifth child (all girls!).  He gave me a bottle of homemade blackberry wine to take away.  He, like many Amish, appreciates…

“Making Hay” in Ohio Amish Country

    Byerik June 13, 2007January 19, 2011

I’m still picking the splinters out of my hands this morning and counting up the nicks and scratches on my arms. The Amish broke a city boy in yesterday. But it was only about three and a half hours, so I guess they went easy on me. Hay is ‘made’ in groups. It’s something Amish farmers need to do regularly in the growing season. I…

    The Amish Church District

    Byerik June 6, 2007June 3, 2024
    25 Comments

The Amish arrange themselves into compact groupings known as church districts. Each district has its own name, usually a geographically-based one–Lamoni South, Randolph, and Crab Orchard are examples of places providing names for districts, these being found in Iowa, Mississippi, and Kentucky Amish communities. Since the Amish travel by horse-and-buggy to one another’s homes for Sunday service, most districts are grouped together in a logical,…

    The Sugarcreek Budget

The Sugarcreek, Ohio Budget newspaper is a vital print lifeline stretching across the diverse Anabaptist settlements of North and South America. Founded in 1890, this weekly paper out of Sugarcreek, Ohio, serves as an information exchange for families sometimes separated by great distances and formidable technological barriers.  The Budget is among the favorites when it comes to Amish reading material. Budget ‘scribes’ regularly report on…

    Amish follicle facts

photo:  Randall Persing Amish women let their hair grow from birth. If you ever catch an Amish female with her hair down, the sheer length of it can be surprising. In fact, with locks often reaching well past waist-length, the typical Amish head-covering seems to somehow bend the laws of physics.  Where is their room for it all up there? A quick diversion: A follicle…

    Do Amish Drink Alcohol?

    ByErik Wesner May 25, 2007August 16, 2023

The Amish & alcohol When I was first learning about the Amish, I was kind of surprised to discover that some Amish people drink alcohol. As I met more and more Amish people, I kept running across examples of this. That’s not to say that alcohol is a big part of Amish society across-the-board. But neither is it completely absent from Amish culture, as outsiders…
