New Wilmington Wash Day
Monday is wash day in this settlement, and it’s just about all blue, or shades thereof. Photos from late September of ’07.

With the races for the presidential nominations heating up, seems you can’t turn around without hearing what so-and-so said about you-know-who, who’s waffling, flip-flopping or what-not. Just 12 more months of it to go. So what do the Amish think about the political process? Well I can’t speak for all of them, but it seems to me that there are some closet political junkies among…
Lancaster County has very good roads, especially compared to most of Amish America, where gravel (and the occasional dirt) roads prevail. Every now and then you’ll find a sign like the one above, indicating an ‘unimproved’ byway–paved but bumpy, narrow and curvy. Every road I’ve driven with a marker like this has been populated largely by Amish farms, and they are always among the most…
The Amish community in Musselshell County, Montana is one of ten in the state. It is part of a rise in interest by Amish in Montana, one of a half-dozen new settlements created there since 2015. Like most if not all Amish settlements in the Treasure State, this community qualifies as “remote”. It lies near the town of Roundup, so named due to it being…
Homeschooling is uncommon among the Amish. Why? Karen Johnson-Weiner suggests in her book Train Up A Child that it conflicts with the concept of community, so important to the Amish. But, some do homeschool. I know at least one Amish family who has. They happen to be members of a New Order Amish church. Amish Cook columnist Gloria Yoder also belongs to a New Order…
Day one of the Amish technology conference at Elizabethtown College. Â This morning I drove an Amish friend who is helping to leading the Ag and Business tour a tour to the Young Center. The tour will take in a number of Amish business including a hydroponics produce grower and a popcorn place. Â The second tour will focus on health and medical related destinations including a…
Rachel Yoder was killed by a stray bullet from a hunter’s rifle, according to new reports. A hunter was getting ready to clean his weapon about a mile and a half away, and discharged the firearm into the air. Â In the most recent news piece I can find, Holmes County Sherriff Timothy Zimmerly describes it as “in all probability” accidental. If there is any “good…

Nothing better than clothes dried on the line!
I love seeing pictures like this. There is a calmness in it. 🙂
I agree with Michelle…line dried clothes are wonderful…and saves money 🙂
~ Dawn (who’s been secretly reading this blog for, oh I don’t know, many many months now) 🙂
When I go riding or driving past a place that has wash out on the line, I take a look to see if it’s an Amish place. Often it is. It has been wash on the line that has called my attention to the existence of some Amish farmsteads that otherwise don’t look overtly Amish.
Dawn, welcome and glad you have been secretly reading (:
I think drying outside must be better. In Poland many people hang clothes inside apartments in the winter—very cramped, and they lack the straight from the dryer softness.
It’s nice to see photos with sunshine and flowers blooming. 🙂
I was in the Smicksburg area last week. It was between 20 and 25 degrees with snow flurries but I saw laundry hanging out. You’d think the clothes would freeze on the line?
You would think so! Could be that space-age polymer freeze-resistant fabric that all the Amish are using nowadays. Just kidding of course. But I thought the basement was the winter drying area of choice.
Le meilleur linge est celui qui sèche à l’air libre. Pas besoin de séchoir électrique, nous avons le soleil et le vent gratuitement à notre disposition !
The best for the clothes it’s driying outside.
