New Wilmington Wash Day
Monday is wash day in this settlement, and it’s just about all blue, or shades thereof. Photos from late September of ’07.

Changes in the tobacco industry–lower prices, declining demand, and a heightened stigma towards the trade–have had many small farmers reeling. Many people don’t realize that some Amish grow and use tobacco (especially those in Lancaster County and related settlements). In this Washington Post article, southern Maryland Amish farmers, along with some non-Amish counterparts, have refused a state-sponsored buyout and shifted to producing a higher-demand leaf…
This ice kiosk is located just south of Shipshewana, Indiana. The person who shares it explains that “it’s fully automated, takes bills and dispenses ice in bags or bulk.” Though some Amish use ice houses, Amish in this northern Indiana community permit home refrigerators and freezers such as those made by companies like Crystal Cold of Arcola, Illinois, or Shipshewana-area E-Z Freeze. Update: Not all Amish…
The Amish, according to Julia Erickson of Temple University, are among the fastest-growing communities in the world. Â Amish average seven children per family. Must be something in the water.
In this video, I answer some questions on the Amish and dating (or “courting”, though that’s not quite the same thing), thanks to info from Karen Johnson-Weiner’s book The Lives of Amish Women. I share a couple of excerpts from the book, which provide answers to the following: Can Amish girls ask boys out for dates? What do Amish feel is the purpose of courtship?…
The horse and buggy is the obvious transportation icon of the Amish but the scooter must be the runner up. Though not all Amish use them they are the classic horseless vehicle among the Amish in Lancaster County (where bikes are not really seen) and a number of other communities. Scooters were big a few years back when a scootering craze seemed to hit English…
Have you ever heard anyone make a claim like “the Amish are against technology”, or that they “shun” modern conveniences? There is even the idea that Amish think technology is “evil”. I recall the video for the silly Weird Al Yankovic song, with Amish feet stomping on a pile of gadgets in one scene. These ideas are out there, and they get perpetuated by television…

Nothing better than clothes dried on the line!
I love seeing pictures like this. There is a calmness in it. 🙂
I agree with Michelle…line dried clothes are wonderful…and saves money 🙂
~ Dawn (who’s been secretly reading this blog for, oh I don’t know, many many months now) 🙂
When I go riding or driving past a place that has wash out on the line, I take a look to see if it’s an Amish place. Often it is. It has been wash on the line that has called my attention to the existence of some Amish farmsteads that otherwise don’t look overtly Amish.
Dawn, welcome and glad you have been secretly reading (:
I think drying outside must be better. In Poland many people hang clothes inside apartments in the winter—very cramped, and they lack the straight from the dryer softness.
It’s nice to see photos with sunshine and flowers blooming. 🙂
I was in the Smicksburg area last week. It was between 20 and 25 degrees with snow flurries but I saw laundry hanging out. You’d think the clothes would freeze on the line?
You would think so! Could be that space-age polymer freeze-resistant fabric that all the Amish are using nowadays. Just kidding of course. But I thought the basement was the winter drying area of choice.
Le meilleur linge est celui qui sèche à l’air libre. Pas besoin de séchoir électrique, nous avons le soleil et le vent gratuitement à notre disposition !
The best for the clothes it’s driying outside.
