Inside An Amish “Mini-Barndominium” Home (22 Photos)

This is a neat, quite new property – tucked away in a corner of Amish Virginia. I’m calling it a “Mini-barndominium” because it’s described as a barndominium – but it’s just a one bedroom, one-bathroom home.

Compared to the much larger Kentucky Amish barndominium home we saw recently, you can notice the difference.

But that one was for a much larger family, and this is not. In any case, the Amish are more apt to call this a “shop home” than a “barndominium”, (but who knows, maybe that will change over time).

A Secluded Getaway in Amish VA

The community is one I’m pretty familiar with – Halifax County, Virginia (Nathalie). On first look, I thought this was a “getaway” or “weekend” home on some hunting land (a 75+ acre property).

And there is a hunting stand on the property – which no doubt is one of its selling points, for some.

But, on closer look I suspect this might be the “permanent” home of a young married couple, perhaps with a new and growing family. The little red wagon outside the home in the top photo also suggests they might have a little one.

As noted already, it’s quite “tucked away” – in what is already a quite rural area (see the aerial photos & map layout below).

Halifax County is home to Virginia’s second-largest Amish settlement, with over 400 Amish residents. I visit from time to time; some longer-time readers might recall this is where the King family’s (former) variety store is located.

Here’s the extensive property description via Zillow:

Tucked in the quiet countryside of Nathalie, VA, this 76+/- acre property blends rural charm, outdoor recreation, & long-term investment potential. 43+/- acres are planted in loblolly pines, offering future merchantable timber value—great for buyers seeking land that pays you back over time. At its core sits a custom Amish-built barndominium featuring 1BR/1BA, 1-car garage, & a spacious attic ready to convert into a 2nd BR or loft.

Enjoy the outdoors on the covered front porch or the new back patio w/ fire pit (poured Mar 2025), perfect for unwinding after a long day. The land features 3 creeks, 2 of which merge & flow into a larger creek on the northern portion, offering year-round water access for wildlife.

A -mi hiking/horse trail leads to the main creek, winding through hardwood creek bottoms marked by well-used game trails. Two box blinds are already in place—one overlooks a -acre clover food plot, the other sits above the northern hardwoods.

You’ll also find 1.3+/- acres of fenced pasture with a multi-stall run-in shed—ideal for horses or small livestock. A separate storage shed near the barndo conveys, perfect for tools, equipment, or a future lounge, craft shed, or outdoor office space.

Whether you’re after a private hunting retreat, timber investment, weekend escape, or future homestead, this turnkey rural property delivers space, beauty, and value.

Located just a short drive to South Boston & Halifax, and within reach of Danville & Lynchburg, you’ll enjoy easy access while maintaining the peace of country living.

With income potential, hunting features, and move-in-ready improvements, this 76-acre homestead in southern VA offers the lifestyle & value land you’ve been craving.

Inside the Home

First a look at the kitchen. You can see this is done in a more “modern” style. It’s a newer home for a young family. Looks like a little booster seat in the chair there. You can also notice hooks in the ceiling for hanging battery lights.

Another view of the kitchen showing gas stove. More progressive Amish use these, while plainer Amish rely more on wood cookstoves or kerosene stoves.

The cozy living room with recliners and sofas. “Amish notes” include the rolltop desk, clock, decor, and the thermometer-barometer-hygrometer way over in the corner.

The sole bedroom, also looking rather Amish. “D” and “K” are no doubt the couple’s initials. In fact you’ll even find her first name visible here.

And the single bathroom. Simple bathroom layout. It looks like they have a hanging candle here.

The Amish, even the plainest ones, don’t really rely on candles for their lighting (too dim and kind of dangerous). What you see here is likely more for “atmospheric” purposes, so to speak.

And the wash room bit of the garage space. Classic wringer washer and the hat and coat of “D”, the man of the house, on a wall hook.

This is likely another view of the same space, the garage. That large black safe would also qualify as a typical “Amish note”. Commonly seen in Amish homes for safekeeping of valuables.

And another angle of the same space. We can see the sleeping spot and food of the family’s four-legged friend.

That’s it for the interior shots. Again, just a “young family” home, which, if their family is expanding, might be why this one is up for sale.

Outside

This aerial view gives you a sense of the secluded feel. This area of Halifax County is rural with a lot of wooded area. The road the home is located on has quite a few Amish homes along it.

Another view from the front side of the home.

And here’s the back patio mentioned in the description. Just installed a few months ago. Everything about this home feels fresh and new.

Looking around the property, here’s the bit that’s going to appeal to the hunters among potential buyers:

You’ve also got a couple of additional buildings – two sheds. This one has the look of a mini-home itself.

And this is one for the horses.

Speaking of which:

Hello there.

One more aerial view. If you appreciate privacy, this place is going to appeal:

So what’s the price of this charmingly secluded “mini-barndo”?

It’s currently on the market at $398,500, represented by Justin Rolfe of Mossy Oak Properties Land and Luxury.

    VA Amish Home For Sale

Erik, I must be blind as I’m not getting the lady’s first name. Awww . . . If only I had the money, it’d be the perfect place for me as I am single w/o dependents. And the milder winters (I’m in MN) would sure be nice for a change. The outdoor spaces would be heavenly! Thanks for letting us see the place.

    Barndemonium?

Wow! That is a mouthfull. In the midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky) these are quite popular and are called a “shouse.” This is a combination of the words “shop” and “house” which is what it is – a shop/house.
Ps. Not a barn – farm animals are not in there!
