Inside A Cozy Classic Amish Farm Home (20 Photos)

Wonderful photos from another Minnesota Amish home. There have been quite a few of these lately, all in the state’s largest Amish settlement in the Harmony/Canton area of Fillmore County, MN.

As you can see from the aerial photos, this property has a neat and “cozy” layout on an 18-acre lot. And the home itself, owned by a family in a quite plain Swartzentruber Amish group, is simple, beautiful, and inviting.

The Zillow description describes it as a “hobby farm”, which is probably not what the Amish owners would call it, but I get the term:

This picturesque 18-acre Amish hobby farm sits 4 miles south of Lanesboro where you can enjoy all the bluff country has to offer. The Main House sits on a south facing hillside overlooking panoramic views of the surrounding area. The Main house is a spacious 6-bedroom home built in 2023 and has approximately 3500 sq ft total with 2500 finished square feet.

There is a second “dawdihaus” home too:

Capture the morning sunrise over the bluffs on the spacious covered front porch. The walkout basement leads to a nice cement patio for additional seating. The second smaller 2-bedroom home could be a good Air BB or “guest house”. (No electric or plumbing in either dwelling). There is buried fiber optic at the road.

The garden going by the photos is sizable – as is common with Swartzentruber families:

There is a large established garden and approximately 12 acres of fenced pasture seeded in alfalfa, oats, and grass. There are mature black walnut and oaks throughout the wooded areas around and through the pasture. There are multiple apple trees next to the house and in the pasture. There is a newer well and septic.

The towering windmill sits next to the classic 55×70 hay barn with big timber beams, hay loft up, and horse stalls on the main level. The 35×50 outbuilding has new steel. The insulated machine shed is a nice place for projects and storage. Approximately 35 miles to Rochester, Winona, and Lacrosse.

Let’s have a look at the home.

Kitchen

The kitchen is spacious and with a looong table (I had to crop some of these photos), suggesting this is also a “classic” big Amish family. The six bedrooms also suggests that (photos of those below).

Here’s another angle, looks like someone has been packaging eggs for sale on the table.

Amish homes in these communities tend to have a classic look to them with the cook stove as a centerpiece of sorts.

And over here a kerosene stove which is good for cooking on in the summertime so you don’t generate as much heat. These photos were taken in July I believe.

Here’s the entry room with a place for muddy boots and washing hands. This home uses a gray color for its molding and cabinets in these rooms, but in the bedrooms you’ll see they switch to something different.

Living Room

Here’s a view from the one living room photo. Lots of rockers and stand-alone wooden chairs, as is common in the Swartzentruber homes. No sofas, recliners or that sort of thing as you’d see in more progressive Amish homes.

A quick look in the basement at the canned goods store.

Bedrooms

Let’s have a look at some of the six bedrooms in this simple but cozy and eye-pleasing Amish home.

The bedrooms, at leat most of them, have blue doors and closet spaces painted in the same bold blue. Love it.

Here’s another one, probably one of the older boys.

This is probably shared by several children with the multiple beds.

Two windows like that probably makes for great summer sleeping with the cross-ventilation.

Back outside, here are a few more views of the exterior. In this next one you can see that is quite a large garden.

Amish from this group are known to have larger-than-average gardens, generally growing and canning more of their own food than other Amish groups (one study found that Swartzentruber gardens were even seven times larger than those of other Amish). It’s also possible that this family sells some of their produce as an income earner.

They took some quite nice aerial shots here giving you a sense of the picturesque layout.

And another.

And some closer views of the home and property.

The second home mentioned in the description looks to be what you see on the right in this photo. Definitely older than the main home.

So what is the price for this 3,500 square foot (2,500 finished) home on an 18-acre property?

It’s on the market right now at $399,900 (it had a price reduction a couple weeks ago of about $25,000). It’s listed by Jeff Brogle of Bluff Country Properties.

Nice looking place though you’ll need to install a bathroom and electric. But if you’re thinking of purchasing an Amish home you probably have in mind some changes anyway.

As mentioned at top, this community has seen a number of homes listed online over the past year or so. Check those out here:

I’ve been to the Lanesboro/Harmony/Canton area many times. The Amish who live there often refer to it as the “Fillmore” settlement (named after Fillmore County where the settlement is located). I’m glad that the aerial photos were taken that show the farmstead’s setting in what is called “Bluff County”.

Here is a partial description of Bluff Country from the Bluff Country website. The area “is unique in its combination of hardwood forests, trout streams, agriculture, apple orchards, numerous springs and underground caves, as well as flocks of wild turkeys, bald eagles, and herds of whitetail deer” and the “landscape is characterized by towering bluffs, sinkholes and swift rocky streams”. A beautiful area especially in autumn. The many Amish farmsteads in the Fillmore settlement area make it even more beautiful.

    Why are they moving?

There are a few Amish homes in this area for sale. Any idea why they are all moving from the area?

    Dear Eric,

You are so right about this Swartzentruber farm. Picture perfect in every way. I love the big garden. I too love the blue and purple. Thank you for these superb photographs. Perfectly cozy.

Glad you thought so too Larry! It would be hard for me to live in a Swartzentruber home, but to me they are among the most visually appealing.
