Inside A Simple & Cozy Minnesota Amish Home (26 Photos)
Here’s another simple but beautiful Amish home. We’ve already seen one home from this community (Harmony, Minnesota), which was one of the most attractive Amish homes we’ve featured here. This one is similar.
It’s described as a “hobby farm” in the listing – a five-bedroom home on 6.5 acres. This is a Swartzentruber Amish community, so that means the home has no bathrooms.
Here’s the description via Zillow:
This rolling picturesque 6.5 acre Amish hobby farm sits at the end of a long driveway. The 3 acres of fenced pasture includes a lush open field and black walnuts trees. The 5-bedroom home was built in 2009 and has 2304 finished square feet with 3,456 total square feet.
The house design offers a spacious floorplan throughout. No electric, plumbing, or modern heating system. Heating is by wood burning stove. Water is to house and outbuildings. Seller to install new septic system.
Enjoy the east facing 7’ x 36’ covered porch for spectacular sunrises, afternoon shade, and overlooking the large established gardens and greenhouse.
The 30 x 40 outbuilding has horse stalls and a hay storage up top with access to an additional fenced pasture area. The 24 x 36 building has finished insulated and heated space with water hydrants. The 40 x 60 outbuilding has good cold storage space. Approximately 35 miles to Rochester, Winona, and Lacrosse.
Let’s dive into the photos and have a look.
Inside the Home – Kitchen
Starting with the simple kitchen. Many of the interior photos are taken with a wide view, so I’ve zoomed in on interesting bits.
The “Pioneer Princess” is a type of old-fashioned cookstove popular with Amish. If you’ve looked at Amish home interiors, odds are you’ve come across this type of stove. Pioneer Stoves has an interesting history with Amish roots.
I always find the classic oilcloth-covered Amish kitchen table beautiful in its simplicity. This one looks like it needs to be pulled out at mealtimes to be fully used.
Here’s a view from the opposite angle.
And across from the stove.
A narrow pantry space full of kitchen necessities
Entryway sink – a standard and very useful feature in Amish homes.
Main room
This is the main living room. There are several photos from different angles.
As is common in Swartzentruber homes, you see a traditional assortment of rockers, both hickory-style and “conventional”, each covered with a quilt-style covering for additional comfort.
Unlike some more progressive groups, this one does not permit cushioned upholstered furniture (so you won’t see recliners and puffy sofas in these Amish homes, like you do in some).
I enjoy the use of color in these homes, going along with the rich wood tones. Many Amish homes are hardly drab inside, even in the plainer communities. That said, they’re not all this nice to look at.
Note the day bed in the corner. Good napping spot.
This is not a big spacious room like we’ve seen in some recent Amish homes. However it has a close cozy feel, which probably makes it easier to keep warm in a frigid Minnesota winter. That stove doesn’t have to work quite as hard in a room of this size.
Bedrooms
Let’s have a look at some of the bedrooms. This first one is a young man’s room, complete with hunting trophies.
This one caught my eye for its old-fashioned school desk. You will still find this style of desk in Amish schoolhouses today.
And this would be a girl’s room.
Basement
There are a few basement photos. Here we see the canned goods store. While most Amish families stack their canned goods on shelves, sometimes you see them laid out like this.
Area for canning, doing the wash, processing food, and so on.
Other views
Here are some other shots from around the property. First, how about this view from the porch. Feels like you can see for miles.
Some of the outbuildings. One of them is a workshop.
Buggies parked in a large barn space.
Another angle of the home. Looks like someone’s in the vegetable garden.
And finally, another aerial view showing the cozy, picturesque layout of the property. So, what is the price of this place?
It’s currently on the market at $300,000, represented by Jeff Brogle of Bluff Country Properties, LLC. Nice place!
