1947: Amish court conflict over a “mite”

We’ve seen Amish in court quite a bit lately.  Some cases have involved Amish clashing with laws of the state (KY SMV; PA horse neglect).  Others involve grievances between Amish and former Amish (Amish beard-cutting). For another example of the latter, we can look back in history to a 1947 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette newspaper piece  “‘Mited’ Amish Farmer Given $5,000 by Jury”, describing an unusual lawsuit…

Amish Shoe Repair

I have a favorite pair of shoes. They’re cold-weather hikers, originally waterproof but after a few years of use, not so much anymore. That’s not the problem, though, as apparently a tiny hole has appeared, somewhere, in the sole (where exactly, I haven’t been able to determine).  However it lets enough water in that walking around on a rainy day or on wettish pavement soon…

Ohio Amish shooting explained?

There has been a lot of speculation over the Holmes County Amish shooting.  Many have wondered about the lack of a bullet hole in the buggy, and the distance from which the gun was fired. Over the weekend, reader Mary (not to be confused with Michigan Mary, who has also added details) shared some insights into the tragedy. Mary is a cousin of Rachel Yoder’s…

Last week in Holmes County – photos

Last week in Holmes County – photos

Michigan Mary, who commented earlier on the Ohio Amish shooting, has shared some photos taken in Holmes County last week. In my neck of the woods we just hit winter–both technically and meteorologically speaking, with the season’s first snowfall yesterday.   Looks like they’ve had a bit of the same lately in Ohio. Exotic animal farm. There are a couple of these in Holmes County–the…

Amish shooting “likely accidental”

Rachel Yoder was killed by a stray bullet from a hunter’s rifle, according to new reports. A hunter was getting ready to clean his weapon about a mile and a half away, and discharged the firearm into the air.  In the most recent news piece I can find, Holmes County Sherriff Timothy Zimmerly describes it as “in all probability” accidental. If there is any “good…

Four Holmes County Amish groups

Following yesterday’s post on the Ohio Amish shooting, there was some discussion on the group of Amish victim Rachel Yoder belonged to. Rachel was apparently a member of the Andy Weaver Amish, which is colloquially known as the “Dan” Church (thanks to Michigan Mary, who was about a mile away at the time of the shooting Thursday, for filling in some gaps). Rachel’s home community…

Ohio Amish girl shot and killed

Sad story: late last week a 15-year-old Amish girl was shot and killed while returning home by buggy in the Holmes County, Ohio Amish settlement. Rachel M. Yoder was coming back from a Christmas party for employees of the produce business she worked for. The shooting apparently happened a few miles east of Fredericksburg, near the Holmes/Wayne County border.  Police are treating her death as…

Amish horses the latest hair-cutting victims

It sounds like a parody, but it isn’t.  An Ohio Amish man was arrested Monday for shaving off the manes and tail hair of an Amish neighbor’s horses. Apparently there was bad blood between them (the two men, not the man and the horses).  He also left a threatening message on the other party’s answering machine. Inspired by the Bergholz group?  I don’t think horses…

The Amish Beard Attacks

The Amish Beard Attacks

Chances are you’ve heard of the recent attacks on Amish by now.  Members of a small Ohio group have been entering Amish homes and cutting off men’s beards and men’s and women’s hair.  Authorities have gotten involved and now there are serious charges – kidnapping and burglary – against the perpetrators. The group in question is located near the town of Bergholz in Jefferson County…

Amish Making Apple Butter

Amish Making Apple Butter

The picture above was taken at an Amish farm in Hardin County, Ohio (we’ve mentioned this settlement already this summer, see the unusual buggy post). Can you guess what’s happening here? The family only does this once a  year.  Luckily, that was the day I stopped by! UPDATE: if you guessed apple butter, well done! See below in the comments for a bit more background…
