Jim Cates: Aaron and The 1964 Lincoln Convertible
Do young Amish men drive motor vehicles? For most non-Amish adolescents, acquiring a license at age 16 or thereabouts–usually followed by a beater of a car–is an assumed rite of passage. For Amish youth–many of whom enjoy freedoms similar to that of non-Amish during their “running around” years–the choice is not so obvious. While it’s safe to say the majority do not, more than a few…
John Schmid Sings “Amish Nicknames”
My friend, country and folk musician John Schmid, is a favorite among the Amish. John’s story, at least in part, can be found here. John is the founder of Common Ground Ministries, and has been long active in prison ministry and other mission outreach via his music. If you’ve ever wondered if Amish like music beyond strictly religious songs, some – even many – do….
What’s a good gift for an Amish person?
This is a question that comes up from time to time, most recently asked by reader Treva. Â The sense I get is that people want to buy something culturally appropriate that the receiver will appreciate, and above all to not offend anyone with their gift. Getting a gift for an Amish person is not as tough as it might seem. Â I’ve put together a couple…
What Is An Amish Wedding Wagon?
How to prep food for 300+ wedding guests? The Amish, accustomed to frequent weddings with many attendees, have figured out a way to make the whole affair easier and more efficient. Enter the wedding wagon: For those who don’t know what a wedding wagon is, it is like an RV with a ramp added on, with six or seven propane gas stoves and ovens in…
Amish Homemade Ketchup & Salsa
Amish, at least the ones I run into, always seem to like sharing. Besides the stick-to-your-ribs meals and cool drinks of water, I always seem to be getting takeaways from Amish friends–homemade wine, books, gourds, inspirational CDs for the car. Yesterday’s haul comes in the middle of canning season, following a bumper crop of tomatoes–a jar each of homemade ketchup and salsa. ‘Ervin’, my friend and…
A Dozen Amishmen Collect Ice From A Frozen Pond (14 Photos)
These near-perfect photos by David Marvitz almost look like something staged or taken from a film. Actually, the scenes remind me of some of Bill Coleman’s masterpiece photos taken in the Big Valley of central PA, which have a similar quality. But these are real Amish at work – cutting and collecting ice in the Hazleton, Iowa community. The ice will be used for cooling…

I found the article absolutely fascinating. I was glad that the author pondered questions about technology and community, rather than hold up the Amish to ridicule as hypocrites.
Thanks for checking it out. On the whole the article is really well done. And it’s actually about 7 or 8 years old. Great point on the Amish not shunning all tech, but being ‘techno-selective.’
I remember the first time I saw an Amish person with a cell. A lady taking a call from her husband at work. Blew me away.

I have to admit, I would be flabbergasted, too, if I saw an Amish person on a cell phone.
