Visiting a “Lancaster Maryland” Amish Food Stand (20 Photos)
As the Lancaster County Amish community has grown, it has sprawled beyond the borders of the county itself. And for years, readers have noted that Lancaster County Amish are living across the state line in Maryland.
On a previous visit to Pennsylvania (Dec. 2023), I drove around a bit in the area of Rising Sun in Cecil County, MD. The county has a separate, small Amish community in the area of Cecilton – not to be confused with this “Lancaster spillover” area.
I only had a rough description of where the Amish in the area live, but it wasn’t too difficult to find some of the Amish farms and homes in the area. These Amish would still be considered part of the Greater Lancaster County settlement.
As I was driving around, I came across this Amish stand, not too far from Rising Sun. So of course I stopped in.
What’s for sale here
Here’s a look at this stand’s selection. It wasn’t huge, but a nice mix of baked treats, snacks, canned goods and more.
Here you can see granola, Christmas Ribbon Jello Salad, I believe a cheese spread, and some seasoned pretzels (I got some of those – yum).
The granola ingredients are visible here: Oats, Almond flour, Pecans(?), Ground flax, Coconut sugar, Cinnamon, Butter. Sounds pretty healthy for granola.
These photos are from December 2023, but I think $3.75 for a dozen eggs would be considered a great price right now. But wait, what’s that? “Christmas is coming” – it looks like they knocked it down to a flat $3 as a holiday special. Wow.
Pies, Cookies & Donuts
Stacks of pies were lined up on a weathered bench.
Here we have Shoofly in two sizes, for $5 and $2.50.
Next, Apple Cheesecake Pie for $7.50.
Whoopie pies.
They had a nice selection of homemade cookies as well.
Packs of homemade cookies (here we see Monster and Chocolate Chip) at a reasonable $5 each.
These are labeled as “Blueberry Donuts“, but where I’m from, these are “donut holes”. Also just a fiver.
Being just prior to Christmas, they had some “Happy Holidays” arrangements for sale.
And several types of jam/jelly. Here we have Hot Pepper and Peach Marmalade. The stand is on a fairly busy road, as you can see with traffic passing by.
Very eye-catching color. I wish I could tell you how it tasted, but for some reason I didn’t get one of these.
Payment
Like many such Amish stands, there was no one manning this one.
Payment is on an honor system basis. So I dropped my cash in the slot you see here.
My only regret was not being able to exchange a few words with someone here, to learn more about their story.
I’m not sure what the official name of this stand is, or if it even has one.
But if you’re local and want to drop by, it was located where Walnut Garden road meets 272, not quite a mile down from the PA state line. I’m assuming they are still there. Nice spot!
