Inside A “Classic-Modern” Amish Home (26 Photos)

Today’s Amish home is in Middlebury, Indiana (part of the large northern Indiana Amish settlement) and gives us a look at what life in a more materially progressive community looks like.

There are a number of classic Amish accents in this home – combined with more modern ones as well. Together it creates the feel of a “classic-modern” Amish home (hat tip to Jim Halverson for passing this one along).

Another thing to note: though listed on realty site Zillow, this one is going up for auction in about two weeks (a “Phone Bid” auction). Here’s the brief description:

AUCTION!! This 3 acre property is selling at Phone Bid auction with bidding to end on Feb 12th at 5pm. The posted starting bid is not the buy it now price. The large 4 bedroom 2 bath home was built in 2022 with ICF concrete forms being used for the main level making this a very affordable home to heat.

The property does not currently have electricity to the home or barn. The barn was built in 2025 and set up for horses. The property does have horse pastures and some wooded area with wildlife seen quiet often. Auction Open houses are being held on 1-15,22,29 & 2-5 from 3-5pm.

The interior shows what I mean – let’s start with the living room, where we see multiple built-in gas lighting fixtures. That’s considered progressive by some Amish – but more traditional than some of the other lighting in this home, as you’ll see further on.

Cozy sitting area with comfy recliners like you’d see in many Amish homes. However notice the glass topped coffee table, modern patterned floor rug, and some of the seating, all of which contributes to the “classic-modern” feel here.

Contrast that with the traditional-looking roller light cabinet/book holder (this one has a battery light though, rather than an LP tank, which would traditionally go in the cabinet base) and it only adds to the mixed effect.

And a third angle of the same room; we see a traditional wood heating stove on the opposite wall (and in other parts of the home). This home feels very spacious by the way, as you see here and in the upcoming photos. The home is over 4000 square feet when it comes to floor space.

Here we have the kitchen table area, with Dewalt battery light hanging from the gas fixture.

Also notice the decor accents, including a framed religious inspirational text  and what looks like a fancy wall candle mount.

Peeking to the left, we see an office area, for bookkeeping, paying bills and the like.

Here we have the view looking back at the table from the opposite side, with the kitchen visible. This photo gives you a good sense of the spacious feel – looking all the way down into the living room, that back wall feels like half a football field away 🙂 .

These next two photos are quite similar but I put them together to demonstrate an interesting feature of this kitchen. Note the tall cabinet-style doors to the right of the fridge.

Surprisingly they open to give access to another space.

Also note that the dark stained wood cabinetry has a classic Amish look…though the ceiling lighting is beginning to morph into something you would see in a non-Amish home, with traditional bulbs (though no doubt battery-powered, as this home is not wired for electricity).

Here is the room on the other side of those doors. Not sure what this is used for, but a nice extra space for something.

Moving along to the bedrooms – here’s another example of the classic-modern mix. Traditional furniture you might see in many Amish homes – but what appears to be wall-to-wall carpeting.

That is not something you see much of in Amish homes, or at least wasn’t in the past (perhaps it is a trend in this community…I haven’t been in many northern Indiana Amish homes for some time to be able to say).

View from the opposite side.

Here is what must be a daughter’s room.

And bunk beds in this boys’ room. Notice anything else in here?

That looks like a framed photo on the nightstand. Likely it is a school photograph; Amish children who go to public schools will have them taken. In this progressive community, a good number of children do attend the local public schools.

A children’s playroom.

Now a look at one of the fanciest-feeling rooms of the home: the bathroom. The countertop and color scheme (modern muted gray tones rather than wood stained) give it that feel.

The spacious basement. Compared to many Amish home basements, this one is nearly empty. In all likelihood this is where they have church (see my recent post, if you missed it, on what an Amish basement set up for church looks like).

A sizeable garage/horse barn comes with this place.

The family’s buggies parked inside.

Horses in the backyard.

So, that gives you a decent feel for the place. A spacious and very pleasant Amish home, on a three-acre lot. As mentioned, this one is going up for auction; any guess at the starting price?

They’ve got it posted at “Est. $525,000” which I assume is where they’re starting from here. This home is listed by Jesse Riegsecker of Bright Star Real Estate Services.

As far as how to place a bid, there is a number listed at the linked listing, along with the agent/agency name, but I’m not sure if that’s where you do it or not.

You’ve also got the opportunity to view the home at the posted open house dates. It looks like most of them have passed, but there is still one to go on Feb. 5, if I’m reading it right. In any case, someone, Amish or English, is going to end up with a nice place here.

    Nice home

What I found kind of ironic is the children’s playroom . It includes a blender in a microwave ! Something that I would assume we’re not be in an Amish home

    Gorgeous home!

    Hi Erik,
I’ve been in a lot of Amish homes, but never one like this one! How great it is to see the trim finished throughout the house! Their ordnung must say it’s ok, so why not, eh?
I was in the Kingston/Dalton, WI settlements two weeks ago, and had a nice visit with Amish friends. Also, I had to stop at Mishler’s Bulk Foods and stock up.
Hope you’re staying warm! It’s been a long, cold snap here in WI, and we’re all ready to have it over with!
    Blessings to you †

    Quite beautiful

Makes a person wonder why leave such a beautiful place. Its so beautiful. We have a small Amish community in Morrison TN. I have made a friend who is Amish that I go visit. She is only 2 hours from me. I buy her handmade products and gift them to others. She has such a beautiful talent.

There appears to be a thermostat on the wall in the living room, too.

I wonder how they vacuum the carpeting? It’s a beautiful home. I really like that they have a bathroom off their bedroom, shower and all.
