Very sad for this horse, though fortunately the Amish woman driving the buggy was not injured. This happened Monday in the New Wilmington, Pennsylvania Amish community. From NCNewsonline:

A New Wilmington man has been cited for his involvement in a three-vehicle accident that involved an Amish horse and buggy in Wilmington Township on Monday.

The collision reportedly occurred around 6:50 a.m. on Route 208 near an unnamed street.

According to state police, Nicholas J. Hamilton, 32, of New Wilmington, was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck and rear-ended the buggy, driven by Anna Mast, 42, of New Castle.

The horse broke free from the buggy and ran into the intersection of Routes 208 and 18, where it was struck by a Volkswagen Taos driven by Laura M. Dieter, 53, of New Wilmington.

The horse died from injuries in the accident, police said.

Just sounds like a horrible thing to experience – obviously for the horse, but also for the others involved including the driver who wasn’t expecting to see a horse gallop through the intersection.

The driver who struck the buggy was cited for “following too closely”. That’s a common enough issue in buggy accidents, and one which is good to keep in mind.

This also brings to mind past runaway horse incidents, which happen occasionally when horses get loose, sometimes because they aren’t tied up well enough.

This one was a tragic result of an accident and obviously no fault of the Amish driver. It happens sometimes as a result of buggy accidents. The woman driving the Taos was fortunate that she was okay; runaway horses have been involved in quite serious accidents where car drivers have been badly injured.

The New Wilmington community is home to over 3,000 Amish residents, and is one of the oldest Amish settlements in the nation, with Amish having settled there in 1847.

    Horse Dies After Crash

So very sad about the horse. It must’ve been just terrified. Thank goodness all drivers are okay. “Following too closely”. When are people going to realize . . . ??
