Amish Life

Stan Wesner 1946-2014

My father passed away two weeks ago, having been diagnosed with mesothelioma back in March. Following surgery in July, we were hopeful, but shortly thereafter learned that the cancer had already spread, and there was little more to be done. We lost him a few weeks later, at home. When you read about mesothelioma, a rare, aggressive disease which comes from asbestos exposure, you learn it is…

Two Amish Girls Abducted in New York (Updated: Girls Found Alive; Arrests Made)

Local news outlets are reporting that two Amish girls in upstate New York have been abducted while tending their family’s produce stand (Note: since the girls have now been found, the Amber Alert info, artist’s sketch, news station videos, and the girls’ names, originally included with this post, have been removed).  The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s office has activated the Amber Alert for New York state. The thing you…

When a son joins the Amish: We are wimps!

When a son joins the Amish: We are wimps!

One of our readers, Anne, has a son named Ed (not his real name) who became Amish a few years ago. We hear from Anne from time to time in this ongoing series called “When a son joins the Amish”. Anne has previously written about the photo policy when she visits her son, a hard winter, her friends’ reaction to her son’s conversion, and dental problems. Anne recently…

Bergholz Beard-Cutting Convicts Return from Prison

Last year, Sam Mullet received 15 years for his role in beard and hair cutting attacks on Amish in eastern Ohio. But 15 others got lesser terms, ranging from a year and a day to seven years. The first of the Bergholz people have now done their time and returned home to eastern Ohio. A Reuters news piece details how two of the group, married couple Raymond and Kathryn Miller, spent…

This is what a $9,861 Amish buggy looks like

The final price tag on this sweet vehicle is $9,861.18, to be precise. The photos were taken by reader Jerry, who attended a recent auction in Perry County, PA, where the buggy was up for bidding. Here’s the interior:   The price gave Jerry “sticker shock”, he says (and this leaves out the horse, which adds around $1600). Just like ordering a car, you get to select your features…

David Arment and his wife Pam are photographers living in northern Indiana. In today’s Q-and-A, David discusses his craft, including how he takes his photos and what life is like in one of America’s largest Amish settlements. Four arrested for robberies, attacks on Amish

Four teenagers were arrested over the weekend for a spree of robberies and baseball bat attacks against Amish of Geauga County, Ohio. The youth targeted Amish businesses and Amish in buggies and “brutally beat” several Amish men, in incidents over the past week and perhaps earlier. The first reported attack occurred June 22 or 23, with numerous reports of break-ins over the following days. In one…

We have a winner of the latest Name that Amish Community quiz, who got the right answers in yesterday evening just before the bell.  Well done to Linda, who wins a year’s subscription to Family Life magazine. For those curious, I wanted to explain the thinking behind the quiz and how you could have solved it (with a bit of work! 🙂 ). Since I suggested…

Name that Amish Community (& Win 1 Year of Family Life)

It’s been awhile since the last “Name that Amish community” quiz, so I thought it’d be a good time to bring it back. This time to add to the fun, we have a prize. Below you’ll find three photos from three different Amish settlements. Your task is to guess where each was taken (in which community, not just the state). In addition to the clues you’ll…

Amish Artists

Anna J. Weaver is an Amish artist living in New York state. If “artist” doesn’t strike you as a typical Amish occupation, that’s because it’s not–at least not in the classic sense of someone who creates painting, sculpture and the like. By the sound of things, however, Anna has made a pretty decent go of it as a painter. From a recent profile in the Erie Times-News:…
