Driving Safely in Amish Country

According to the L.A. Times article (no longer online) mentioned in yesterday’s post, Lancaster County has seen 146 buggy-vehicle accidents in the past five years.  There have been a total of 205 injuries and seven fatalities.

A few driving safety tips when traveling in areas with horse-drawn vehicles.

Amish buggies travel approximately five to eight miles per hour.  This means the time you have to brake before impact is greatly reduced.

Caution is required when cresting hills as well–you should always slow down.  It’s easy to come up on a carriage that has just begun descending the other side.  This is particularly important when driving in extremely hilly areas such as Holmes County, Ohio.

Patience and common sense will prevent needless tragedy.
