New From Ben & Rose: “Simple Love”

Ben & Rose are out with a new song, called “Simple Love”. It’s their first studio release since “How Great Thou Art” at the end of July.

It’s one of the more contemporary covers they’ve done – a song written by Sarah Siskind and made popular by Alison Krauss. They have done at least one other song popularized by Krauss (“When You Say Nothing At All”).

A lot of what they record goes back decades – sometimes even a century or more – and a good share of it is gospel. Though they do some more modern songs as well and this is a good example of that, a simple ballad about family.

This one was shot on a front porch, and the credits thank someone named Patsy for the use of it. We aren’t told where it is, but I’d imagine it is somewhere in Juniata County, where Ragamuffin Hall, producer Conrad Fisher’s studio, is located.

Rose is on lead vocals again, Ben backing, with Daniel Beachy on steel guitar, and Conrad Fisher on drums, bass, percussion, and both acoustic and electric guitar. I really like the visual setting here of the simple front porch in a pleasant white and green – and I think it fits the song well.

The subject is the singer’s grandfather. It’s a song about contentment, and being generous with what you have to give. At least that’s my take. Here are the lyrics:

I think it’s not going to be in my Top 10 of theirs, though that may be because I’m not that big on ballad-style songs. But, it is still a nice and, as always, very well-done song. Have a listen here:
