Beautiful New Song From Ben & Rose: “Angel Band”

Here’s another song from Ben & Rose from their album “Slowly But Surely” – the final track on it, in fact. So this one has been out awhile, but we’re now getting it along with a video.

“Angel Band” is described as “an old Gospel song” – and one of the oldest they’ve covered, at over 160 years old (even older than this favorite, it appears).

The song was composed by William Batchelder Bradbury, and the lyrics are by Jefferson Hascall. It was published way back in 1860. More on the song from Wikipedia:

“Angel Band” became widely known in the 19th century, both in folk traditions and in published form, e.g. William Walker’s Christian Harmony of 1866, and has been recorded by many artists, probably most famously by the Stanley Brothers, Emmylou Harris, and by the Monkees

It’s a really nice, slow tune, and I do like how they sing the chorus together on this one.

Here are the lyrics as they sing them here. If you look around online, it appears there are other variations and additional verses as well:

Angel Band (Lyrics)

My latest sun is sinking fast
My race is nearly run
My strongest trials now are past
My triumph is begun

Oh come angel band
Come and around me stand
Oh Bear me away on your snowy wings
To my immortal home
Oh bear me away on you snowy wings
To my immortal home

I’ve almost reached my heavenly home
My spirit loudly sings
Your holy ones, behold, they come
I hear the noise of wings

Oh come angel band
Come and around me stand
Oh Bear me away on your snowy wings
To my immortal home
Oh bear me away on you snowy wings
To my immortal home

The video is beautifully shot as well, with the couple playing high up on what appears to be a mountainside, and with views of the beautiful valley below. This may be Juniata County again, home to numerous mountains, and where producer Conrad Fisher’s Ragamuffin Hall studio is located.
