Back in 2017, a story about a potentially life-extending gene mutation found in an Amish community went gangbusters. You can understand why. The gene mutation was credited with giving its Amish carriers a lifespan 10 years longer than those Amish who lacked it. From that report: The discovery was made by scientists from Northwestern University: The first genetic mutation that appears to protect against multiple…
The trial of Shawn C. Cranston in the killing of Amish mother Rebekah Byler and her unborn child was set to commence this month. Jury selection was scheduled for next Tuesday, March 11th, with the trial to being immediately afterward. That will have to wait. In a surprise, news has just broke that the trial will be postponed AGAIN – until June. The reason? New…
A federal appeals court has upheld a decision requiring Amish school children to be vaccinated in New York. These are not Amish children who attend public schools. These are Amish children attending Amish-owned and operated schools. Religious objections do not work here, according to the Second Circuit court ruling. From Courthouse News: MANHATTAN (CN) — A New York State law requiring Amish students to receive…
There’s a wonderful new Ben & Rose studio song out now (released about two weeks ago, in fact) called “Would You Like To Buy Some Flowers”. I missed it until now, because it was released on a different YouTube channel (more on that below). If you’ve missed previous posts, Ben & Rose are the young Lancaster Amish couple who have quite the talent for country…
A man wanted on multiple serious charges led police on a high-speed chase in a remote part of Maine – with the pursuit ending after he hit an Amish wagon carrying six children. Fortunately, somehow no one was hurt, which doesn’t sound like what you’d expect after learning that speeds reached 90 MPH. From Fox 23: Police say they spotted 34-year-old Anthony Vangel of Easton…
I love the photos of this Amish home, on the market in southern Indiana. You’ll see some really neat interior pics below – a mix of plainer rustic charm and spaciousness. These are pretty fresh photos as well going by the snow (it’s only been on Zillow for about three weeks). The community is at Vevay, Indiana (home to two separate Amish groups). The description…
This is a crazy story which somehow flew under my radar the last two days. In Arthur, Illinois, a man who is described as wanting to join the Amish attacked and then attempted to kidnap a 16-year-old Amish girl. I only write “attempted” because she was saved by a 20-year-old female Amish relative – who gave chase and got the abductor to release the girl….
In a reversal of roles I should have seen coming, Amish have now rescued an English driver from flood waters. It was just a week ago when we learned of an Amishman and his horse being rescued by EMA responders from flooding in Tennessee. Now in Kentucky, Amish have, in a way, returned the favor – pulling a stranded vehicle with two passengers out of…
It’s been a while since we’ve had footage of an Amish skier. These videos pop up from time to time. This is one of the better ones you’ll see. It was taken by “J J”, who shares this simple description: I was driving down Mackinac trail in upper Michigan heading to Sault Sainte Marie when I could believe Amish skiing behind their horse & carriage….
First responders came to the rescue of one Amishman and his horse in Middle Tennessee. The report from WKRN is brief: LAWRENCE COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Lawrence County authorities rescued an Amish driver, horse and buggy from Monday’s floodwaters. A spokesperson with the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency told News 2 the horse and buggy were washed off Beasley Road near Lawrenceburg. The spokesperson…
