Amish Skier Carves Up The Roadside (Video)
It’s been a while since we’ve had footage of an Amish skier. These videos pop up from time to time. This is one of the better ones you’ll see.
It was taken by “J J”, who shares this simple description:
I was driving down Mackinac trail in upper Michigan heading to Sault Sainte Marie when I could believe Amish skiing behind their horse & carriage.
There is a small community in Chippewa County, with around 80 Amish.
Horse-and-buggy skiing seems to be a popular wintertime activity for some Amish. Can you blame them? I’ve cued up the video to start at the 9-second mark (the first bit is too wobbly).
This Amish fellow has some moves on the skis as you can see. He goes back and forth over the roadside snowbanks. Looks like a lot of fun.

The Amish teenage boys (not girls) here in Whitefield, Maine enjoy this sport. Pretty impressive!
Neat – and I bet their is ample opportunity for it in your part of the country!
The Amish in Mississippi can only look upon these video clips in envy 😉
Amish man goes skiing
Call me crazy, but that looks extremely dangerous. Especially with cars coming from both directions. Then he has to pay attention to the many mailboxes along the way. Is that “sport” even legal in his area of the country?? I wouldn’t be surprised if Amish get pulled over by the local law enforcement officers for it. Still, if it IS legal, I sure hope he had tons of fun!!
Feels like one of those things that is so uncommon that legislators have never paid it formal attention. Though, there are some obscure and weird laws on the books.
As long as the buggy driver is not distracted and they are on a stretch of road w/out too many roadside obstacles (have to assume they know what they’re doing there), I don’t see much safety issue. Especially at buggy speeds.
Now if the sight of an Amish buggy skier causes every third car passing by to pull out their phone to film it, we might be talking a more concerning safety issue.
