A Visit With Marlene: Autumn, Amish Art, & More
Marlene Lehman and I sat down this week (virtually, that is) for a talk about a wide range of topics. Here is the first part of it.
In this 22-minute vid, we discuss Amish artists, signs of autumn in her Shipshewana-area Amish community, fall craft shows & festivals, “male” and “female” jobs on the farm, and more.
Amish & Mennonite Autumn Festivals
If you’re going to be in the Indiana/Ohio area, Marlene shares three interesting festivals this autumn.
One of them is happening today and tomorrow. That’s Marlene’s Plain & Simple Craft Show – this edition at Ohio Heritage Market in Holmes County, OH.
The others look like a great time as well. They are:
- Sep. 27-28: Plain & Simple Craft Show (Holmes County, OH) – More info
- Oct. 3-5: Fall Crafters’ Fair (Shipshewana, IN) – More info
- Nov. 8-9: Amish & Mennonite Artist Gathering (Shipshewana, IN) – More info
Marlene talks about each in more detail in the video. I hope you enjoy, we had fun as usual. I wanted to get Marlene to show us some of her paintings, but maybe in our next talk.

Thanks for another interesting video with Marlene Lehman. I’m fairly certain that the Kentucky artist she referred to is D. L. Miller from the Munfordville, Ky. Amish community. He is known as “The Backroad Artist”. I met him several years ago at Munfordville at the Amish community’s annual Consignment Auction. After the auction, I bought one of his beautiful paintings done on a turkey feather. Very unique. This one is of a red cardinal, the state bird of Kentucky.
