Inside A Michigan Amish Market Store (17 Photos)

Today Jim Halverson takes us inside a market (and variety store) in the Cass City, Michigan Amish community, which he visited this past Saturday. We had a look at this community in Jim’s photo set from last year.

The Cass City community is one of over 50 in the state of Michigan

It’s a community of around 1,000 people. Once you get over a few hundred Amish residents, there should be a nice variety of businesses in a settlement of that size.

Now let’s check out the Red Maple Market, and a sample of its interesting array of products (we’ll also be seeing some shots of the PineView Fabrics and Variety store, as they’re located in the same building).

Like a lot of stores, the “And More” part of the sign covers a lot of ground.

A selection of food items.

This is “Yoder’s Good Health Recipe”. The label says “An invigorating and therapeutic blend of selected organic herbs, raw apple cider vinegar and juice concentrates.”

And: “An ounce a day puts a little ‘Pep’ in your step!” Natural supplements and remedies are standard in many Amish variety stores. This one contains 20 herbs and spices.

This is what you call a “family size” popcorn bag. The Fifty-Pounder.

Bulk oats and more.

Here’s some of the bagged rolled oats in smaller portions, which are the sizes that most customers are buying here. The bag you see in the middle of the photo weighs 5.79 pounds, and costs $4.05.

And here’s a bag of wheat germ at 60 cents/pound.

As is often the case, they often have an interesting array of books. Here’s one on the dangers of a certain ubiquitous technology.

A coloring book, presumably with rural and Amish-themed scenes.

“Social Security Exemptions: The Past and Present”. Another important topic for the Amish.

This one is from the fabrics store. Amish women appreciate having a good supply of a variety of fabrics available – for clothing, quilting, and other uses.

This is a neat one – off-the-rack clothing sets for Amish toddlers.

Complete with prayer covering (kapp).

Jim notes that the store sells rugs, which they make in-store.

Finally, I liked this sign explaining the subtle “return policy” of the store.

Thanks to Jim for another nice look at the interesting things you might find inside an Amish store. For more photos of the Cass City, MI community itself, check out this post.

    Inside MI stores (Halverson photos)

Oh, how sweet. Ready-made children’s clothing including kapp for a little girl & a set of suspenders for a little boy. I had no idea one could find such items. And the making of rugs INSIDE the store. Now there’s something you don’t see every day. Ha!! Would’ve thought the rugs might be from China, or at least a place the size of Lancaster County. Wonder what the book had to say about that ubiquitous piece of technology?? And the hand-made “return policy” sign: most store owners couldn’t care less. Thank you, gentleman, for a wonderful set of photos. You’ve made my day.

We sell eggs here in New York in the beautiful Hudson Valley and we collect cartons and we noticed one was from way out of state and it was from Maple Farm in Cass city Michigan- so we were just wondering how that carton of eggs traveled from Michigan to New York.
