Ben & Rose Do A Christmas Classic: “Away In A Manger”

Christmas is right around the corner and Ben & Rose are back with their take on a Christmas classic: “Away In A Manger”.

It’s a lovely soft rendition with Jordan Davis and Mark Davis helping out on drums and bass, and producer Conrad Fisher adding guitar. I particularly like the addition of the fiddle by Jason Barie which gives the tune a rich warm lift.

This would be Ben and Rose’s second Christmas song, after last year’s rendition of Dolly Parton’s “Circle of Love”.  If you didn’t know, “Away in a Manger” dates all the way back to the late 1800s (1882 to be precise). Here’s the summary via Wikipedia:

“Away in a Manger” is a Christmas carol first published in the late nineteenth century and used widely throughout the English-speaking world. In Britain, it is one of the most popular carols; a 1996 Gallup Poll ranked it joint second.

Although it was long claimed to be the work of German religious reformer Martin Luther, the carol is now thought to be wholly American in origin.[1] The two most common musical settings are by William J. Kirkpatrick (1895) and James Ramsey Murray (1887).

You probably know the lyrics to this one, but in keeping with custom, here they are. Interestingly, Wikipedia tells us that there are “many variants” in the words of the song. Here are the lyrics from the 1895 version:

Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven to live with thee there.

A Christmas song with the focus on Jesus. Expertly produced as usual by Conrad Fisher. Enjoy a listen here – and I guess it’s not too early to wish you a Merry Christmas:
