Plain craftsmanship

Though Amish may not live in Connecticut, their furniture has gained a following both in-state and across New England. Amish furniture is considered high-quality and durable. Featuring solid wood craftsmanship, Amish tables, chairs and other items stand out against competitors relying on particle board and mass-production, two characteristics not often associated with Amish-crafted furniture.

Amish have increasingly left the farm to open shops providing furniture to Connecticut and other states

Amish furniture makers are typically small-scale operations, located at the home of the craftsman. Amish began starting furniture shops in large numbers just a few decades ago, but the positive reputation of Amish-made furniture pieces has grown rapidly.

Amish woodworkers use a range of hardwoods, including hickory, walnut, cherry, maple, and oak. Amish are highly involved in wood industries, from the actual logging of timber to sawmill processing all the way through to custom furniture craftsmanship and even finishing (finishing shops are another thriving Amish industry).

Family, faith, furniture

In recent years Amish have increasingly spread out from their traditional heartland states of Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Ohio. One cause of the migration has been the high price of land.  With large families, not all Amish can afford to farm.  Furniture shops have sprung up as a viable option requiring less investment than a traditional dairy.

Some Amish start side businesses producing hickory rockers, tables, chairs or other items, before growing a business into a full-scale operation involving family and other community members. Furniture-making allows Amish fathers to stay at home, similar to the dairy farm, passing on Plain values to the next generations.

Though Amish are unlikely to settle heavily in New England states such as Connecticut, due to high land prices, the popularity of Amish furniture means Amish woodworking will continue to be available within easy reach of residents of the Constitution State.

I am looking for a direct source to buy collapsible wooden baskets wholesale. Do you sell this type of item? If so could you send your product line along with your wholesale pricing. If you do not sell this item could you put me in contact with another woodworker who does build and sell collapsible wooden baskets. I am located in South Florida. I can also be contacted by phone:561-791-1341 or by mail 140 Swan Parkway East Royal Palm Beach Florida 33411. Your response would be appreciated.

    2. Our Amish Showroom

      Hi Erik,
I’m so happy to find your website. We have a 4000 sq ft showroom in Colchester,CT. We had decided months ago to change from an all wood unfinished / custom finished store to Amish.

Today we have a large Amish presence. Years ago I made friends with the Riegsecker Family in Shipshewana, N Indiana. They help direct me to the Northern Indiana Woodworkers Show. I made purchases at the show this year and filled our showroom with the most beautiful furniture. Living room, Dining room, Bedroom, Home Office and more.

Since your website is very accurate and complete, I didn’t want you to miss us here in Colchester.

      Nice work,
      Best Regards,
      Mark LaCombe
