Amish Family Performs “Auld Lang Syne”
Here’s one for your New Year. Following the Amish Country Music Video post, some of you brought back to my attention videos by the Brandenberger family of northern Indiana.
I had come across these some years ago but forgotten about them. I think at the time I wasn’t 100% sure if this was an Amish family – or more an “Amish-esque” one (eg, keeping Amish cultural traits but possibly belonging to a different church).
However, I’ve been told by more than one of you that they are Amish, and I’m going with that 🙂 . For that matter, I recognize Brandenberger as a name found in the Allen County, Indiana settlement. I don’t know much about their story, though in many ways they certainly look like “modern Amish”.
This musical family has a popular YouTube channel with dozens of live recordings. Not typical for an Amish family to have their own YouTube channel, but I’ve (mostly) stopped being surprised by things like that.
Here they perform a rendition of the Scottish song Auld Lang Syne, commonly sung to mark the passing of the old year into the new. They say they do the song “Bluegrass style with a little family harmony!” I think you’ll enjoy it. Happy New Year!
Auld Lang Syne
I live in London, Ontario, where Guy Lombardo, who wrote this song, was born! He is commemorated at each New Year’s eve celebration, and also remembered in the historical exhibit at Museum London, where I have worked for twenty years as a Tour Guide. The Thames River flows through the heart of London, and on of the bridges over this river is named the “Guy Lombardo” bridge. Jut a bit of trivia…. This song is beautifully sung by this group, and if the composer was still alive, I am sure he would love to hear this rendition!
Neat to hear that Esther. I understand he popularized the version we know today. There is something special about this tune and the emotion it evokes. I learned something else from you – I knew about London, Ontario, but didn’t know it also had a Thames river 🙂 Happy New Year!
Auld Lang Syne Country Style
This is a very nice version of the song. Nice harmony and instrumentals.
Beautiful isn’t it.
Confused but delighted
I don’t mind telling y’all that I’m confused but delighted by this family. Confused because there’s so much that doesn’t seem to go with the Amish in this scene…from the music and the instruments, the haircut of the man, the obvious electricity, and the buttons on the dresses…I know that often video is allowed but not photography, so I get that, but I’m having trouble with the rest, but hey, it’s a crazy world! The music is lovely though and they are quite skilled. A lovely way to ring in the new year! ❤️
