Ben & Rose: We Learn More Of Their Story

One year after Ben & Rose were first covered in the publication, Saving Country Music has returned to the musical Amish couple, sharing some behind-the-scenes about their lives and background.

I know a lot of people have had some questions about that – including some of the Amish folks in Lancaster County who I talked with recently.

I heard a few things here and there, but nothing I could pin down (admittedly, figuring out the Ben and Rose story wasn’t the main purpose of my visit) – so I’m glad to see this new article on the couple, which includes comments from their producer Conrad Fisher.

Among the interesting nuggets – here Conrad explains why they aren’t necessarily seeking a career in music – despite a pathway that seems wide open to them:

Record labels are pursuing them. Booking agents want to sign them up and put them on big tours. But they’re not really interested in all of that. Ben & Rose just want to sing, and people simply want to hear them.

“They stepped in front of a microphone and immediately had a career,” says Conrad Fisher. “But Ben doesn’t really want a career in music. He wants to be a stone mason. He does like singing, and he’ll do it on the weekends. That part of it is really beautiful and refreshing for me because they just want to make music, which is so rare.”

Conrad also provides more insights as to how, as Old Order Amish, they’ve been putting out music videos for the past year:

The success of Ben & Rose in undeniable, but the biggest question most outside observers have is how are they able to do all of this when Old Order Amish rules disallow the use of modern appliances, the Internet, etc.?

It turns out that the Amish Church in Lancaster county is going through a transition, with one group wanting to remain strictly conservative and follow all the Old Amish rules, and another that wants to relax the rules a little bit to allow things like the use of phones and vehicles in certain important work-related situations, and to allow things like what Ben & Rose are doing with their music.

In this restructuring, a grace period has opened up where members of the Amish community can join a more reformed church without being “shunned.” It’s within this transitional period that Ben & Rose have started releasing videos on a regular basis, and released the 12-song album Slowly But Surely in August.

If you’re familiar with the current situation among the Lancaster County Amish, now is in fact a time of “transition” though others might use different words to describe it – “upheaval” or “disruption” could reflect another perspective.

But this does conceivably explain why Ben and Rose find themselves in a position to more easily be doing what they’ve been doing with their music.

And more on how the community has accepted them:

The acceptance of what Ben & Rose are doing within the Amish community has been mixed for some according to Conrad Fisher, but they have also been very cautious and purposeful with how they are approaching their music. “For the most part, [their community] does embrace this,” Fisher says. “They’re just very careful. Their priority is their family, and they just don’t want to get themselves into something that they regret.”

That is one of the reasons Ben & Rose have only committed to two live shows in 2026 at this point. If they perform live and feel it’s something they want to do more of, perhaps it will be a regular occurrence for the married couple. But they don’t want to let anyone down by booking an entire tour they might not want to play—though they could, and likely would pack theaters in many markets.

There’s a good bit more in the article which you can check out here.

A few thoughts

While in Lancaster County, I did enjoy watching a number of Ben & Rose’s videos with one Amish family I’m friends with. They thought they knew a brother of Ben’s, though didn’t know the couple personally, or even much about them. Another Amish person I spoke with also didn’t know them (it’s a big community) and I heard various things which I haven’t confirmed so will leave out here.

I do think Ben and Rose’s combination of country music and classic religious songs is going to naturally resonate with an Amish audience.

And on one level, I know not all Amish people approve of them going on camera and playing music. But at the same time, I gather people – maybe even those same people – also really enjoy it when they actually listen to the songs! Whether they readily admit that, or not.

The detail about the couple not eagerly pursuing a musical career – in particular the fact that Ben wants to remain a mason – is interesting, and makes you wonder how long their musical efforts will continue. Or, at least at the pace they’ve been going this first year – putting out a new song every two to three weeks, and releasing a first album. I guess only time will tell.

    Ben and Rose

Thanks for letting us know about this most dynamic couple. I’d be willing to bet that even with people wanting to put them on tour, Ben & Rose likely have no clue at all just how popular they are. I for one am thrilled with what we fans have had so far. I applaud them for putting faith and family FIRST as it’s very tempting to choose to go the “other” direction. Happy Holidays to everyone. Thanks, Erik : )

    Ben and rose attire

    I found their clothes interesting,
Rose had on a ribbed top and it looks like Ben has a patterned shirt.

      From the Blue Gate website

It appears that Ben & Rose’s May performance is sold out. I clicked on the seating map and every seat was marked as sold. For those who may be interested (and just to be 100% sure) you should call the Blue Gate Theater in Shipshewana, Indiana.

      No Doubt!

With all the talent that God has given them, they can take their music ministry as far as they want to. Love their music and their spirit.

    Not supported by traditional Amish

Amish churches do not believe in the gospel regarding Jesus as Saviour and Lord. They say believers are crazy, they mentally lost it! There are Amish actually locked into rooms that are born again followers of Jesus because they are considered ‘crazy’! Twice I was considered crazy by Amish because I said I believe! Ben and Rose are not a typical Lancaster county standard Amish. I am so proud of them finding Jesus as their Saviour and Lord and sharing the gospel! God bless your ministry!

Hello, are you one of the Eli Yoder-ites? You are incorrect.

The Amish lifestyle is built on Scripture. Not everyone lives according to Scripture, but the Anabaptist faith itself is built on Scripture. What often gets presented instead is the perspective of people who want to be accepted by the world and therefore portray the Amish as “oh so horrible,” expecting others to take that portrayal at face value. It is not perfect, but it is scriptural.

Many churches today lack true discipleship. They have built a Christianity without sacrifice and have replaced sacrifice with comfort. The Amish didn’t just pull their beliefs from a hat…there is scripture to back them up.

Below is a scriptural summary of core Anabaptist (Amish) beliefs.

      1. Authority of the Bible

Belief: The Bible is the final authority for faith and life.
      Scripture:

2 Timothy 3:16–17 — Scripture is inspired and useful for teaching and correction.

      2. Salvation by Faith Shown Through Obedience

Belief: Salvation comes from God’s grace, but true faith must be lived out through obedience and humility.
      Scripture:

Ephesians 2:8–10 — Saved by grace, created for good works

James 2:17 — Faith without works is dead

      3. Adult Baptism

Belief: Baptism is for those who knowingly commit to following Christ and the church (usually in late teens).
      Scripture:

Matthew 28:19–20 — Make disciples, baptize them

Acts 2:38 — Repent and be baptized

      4. Nonviolence & Pacifism

Belief: Christians must not use violence, fight in wars, or seek revenge.
      Scripture:

Matthew 5:39 — Turn the other cheek

Matthew 26:52 — Those who take the sword will perish by the sword

      5. Separation from the World

Belief: Christians should live differently from the world and avoid pride, materialism, and sinful influences.
      Scripture:

Romans 12:2 — Do not conform to the world

John 17:14–16 — Not of the world

      6. Plain Living & Modesty

Belief: Clothing and lifestyle should be simple, modest, and humble.
      Scripture:

      1 Timothy 2:9 — Modest apparel

1 Peter 3:3–4 — Inner beauty, not outward display

      7. Community Over Individualism

Belief: The church community is more important than personal freedom or preference.
      Scripture:

Acts 2:44–47 — Believers shared everything

Philippians 2:4 — Look to others’ interests

      8. Church Discipline (Including Shunning / Meidung)

Belief: Unrepentant members may be avoided to encourage repentance and protect the church.
      Scripture:

Matthew 18:15–17 — Church discipline steps

1 Corinthians 5:11 — Do not associate with persistent sin

      9. Forgiveness & Reconciliation

Belief: Members must forgive others and seek peace.
      Scripture:

      Matthew 6:14–15 — Forgive others

Romans 12:18 — Live peaceably with all

      10. Foot Washing (Ordinance)

Belief: Practiced as an act of humility and service, usually during communion.
      Scripture:

John 13:14–15 — Jesus washed the disciples’ feet

      11. Communion (Lord’s Supper)

Belief: Taken seriously as a remembrance of Christ, usually twice a year.
      Scripture:

Luke 22:19–20 — Do this in remembrance of Me

      1 Corinthians 11:23–26

      12. Rejection of Oaths

Belief: Christians should not swear oaths; their word should be truthful.
      Scripture:

Matthew 5:34–37 — Let your “yes” be yes

      James 5:12

      13. Limited Use of Technology

Belief: Technology is rejected or limited if it harms faith, family, or community (rules vary).
      Scripture (principle-based):

1 Corinthians 10:23 — “All things are lawful, but not all are beneficial”

1 John 2:15 — Do not love the world

      14. Humility & Submission

Belief: Pride is sinful; Christians must submit to God and church authority.
      Scripture:

Micah 6:8 — Walk humbly with God

Hebrews 13:17 — Obey church leaders

      15. Work Ethic & Simplicity

Belief: Hard work, farming, and craftsmanship honor God.
      Scripture:

Colossians 3:23 — Work as for the Lord

2 Thessalonians 3:10 — If one does not work, neither shall he eat

      16. Marriage for Life

Belief: Marriage is permanent, and divorce is not allowed.
      Scripture:

Matthew 19:6 — What God has joined, let no one separate

      Romans 7:2

      17. No Military or Government Office

Belief: Christians should not hold positions requiring violence or coercion.
      Scripture:

John 18:36 — My kingdom is not of this world

Matthew 5:44 — Love your enemies

    Background Instruments?

Ben and Rose are extremely talented and I love Rose’s voice. But all the songs have instruments playing in the background that you don’t see in the videos. Who’s playing mandolin and fiddle and did I hear drums? And they have some reverb going. Who’s backing them up?

I really have bad feelings about what is to come of this group of “Reformers”. I believe they should be disfellowshipped completely. Either your Amish or you’re not and if you want a slice of the pie go join the whole. The whole being the “Englisch”. This is just my opinion.

When will they start writing “Slowly but surely falling away from the Amish church”? It’s just a joke!

        6 kids per family

It’s important to remember they double roughly every 20 years, so even if only 10% want to live a “less Amish” way, their numbers will still grow and become more noticeable over time since the population as a whole is growing fast.

The retention rate is actually higher today than 60 years ago.
