Karen Johnson-Weiner, professor of Anthropology at SUNY-Potsdam and author of Train Up a Child: Old Order Amish and Mennonite Schools, has a new book coming out this summer, called New York Amish: Life in the Plain Communities of the Empire State.
To my knowledge this will be the first book-length treatment of Amish in New York, and it comes at a fitting time, with the state’s Amish population booming.
I will be sure to have more on it nearer to publication, but in the meantime, if you like you can have a read of a three-part interview we did last year, in which the professor discusses New York Amish, Swartzentruber Amish, and Old Order education.

I am such an “Amish nerd”–I saw this post and exclaimed, “Sweet!” out loud.
I thought “Train Up a Child” was a fantastic and illuminating book, and I’ll very much look forward to this one as well.
According to the February 2010 issue of The Diary, a new settlement started in New York state in January!
Thanks for sharing that Kate! The state has attracted a lot of migration in recent years.
And Emily nice that you enjoyed Train Up a Child–I felt the same way!
I am reading it now
The book was published in 2010 and I requested it from my
local library system and they got it from another library in
a neighboring county and I am reading it now.
It is VERY good, and gives a person like me (who wants to
go and SEE the New York Amish communities) lots of good
information.
