SUV Hits Buggy Head-On: Three Amish People Injured, Horse Killed (Indiana)

This one happened Friday afternoon in Middlebury, Indiana (in the Elkhart-LaGrange community). And yes, it sounds – and looks – like a bad one. From WSBT:
MIDDLEBURY, Ind. (WSBT) — Three people, including a juvenile, were sent to the hospital after their horse drawn buggy was hit Friday afternoon in Middlebury.
Middlebury Police say the buggy was hit head-on by an SUV that crossed the center line on State Road 13 around 2:50 p.m.
The buggy was then pushed into a pickup truck.

Three people, including a child, were thrown out of the buggy. The horse did not make it, as one might expect from any head-on collision with a motor vehicle.
If you’re familiar with the area, the location of the accident was in Middlebury, the 59000 block of State Road 13 between County Road 20 and 24. It happened about 3 PM Friday.
Other details are sparse, and there is no info at this time on why the SUV crossed the center line. Here’s more also from WSBT:
While the scene has cleared, there was massive damage to the horse and buggy and the vehicle.
Middlebury Police said there were three people in the horse and buggy: a young child, along with a man and woman who were all taken to the hospital for injuries.
The two people in the car also went to the hospital to be checked out.
Here’s the damaged SUV, airbags deployed and major damage sustained:

I understand that today’s vehicles are designed to crumple on impact, but that still looks really bad. And it brings home the severity of the accident, even more so than the images of the buggy. Hoping for the best for the victims.

Indiana Horse and Buggy Accident
(sigh . . . ) That’s pretty much all I can do these days, is simply sigh. Can’t tell you how emotional I become every time I read an article about yet another “accident” involving a horse drawn vehicle and a motorized vehicle. Wasn’t it Sigmund Freud who once commented, “There is no such thing as an accident. Only an act of stupidity.” ?? While I realize it is possible that the buggy driver/horse may be to blame here, I still say operators of motor vehicles need to slow the heck DOWN. The simple act of slowing down (and leaving room between yourself and the person in front of you) can and does in fact save lives every year all over the world. When are people gonna “get” that?? Yes, you can get into trouble by driving too slow, but in areas where you’re in the countryside, do what I do: No radio, no phone use, and drive like that “Little old lady from Pasadena”. Better to drive too slow and put distance between you and others, than to drive too fast. Have a wonderful day everybody. Love and prayers to all involved in this latest wreck.
I can imagine
I’ve been on that stretch of road quite a few times over the past 30 years, both by bicycle and when driving our car. I can easily imagine how such a thing could happen there, though I’ll keep it to myself since I don’t actually know.
