This is our third look this year at an Amish property in the Randolph community of Pontotoc County, Mississippi. Back in April we toured a 54-acre homestead with a furniture shop, and in June we looked at another home on 45 acres. At that time, I asked whether the community might be disbanding, seeing so many homes go up for sale (four at the time) at once.

Today’s property was one of those four. It now shows a fresh listing date of October 1, and it just got a price cut.

It also has the most land of the bunch, at 86.5 acres. The home was built in 1996, not too long after Amish first settled here, so it was among the earlier homes in the community.

Here’s the description:

Rare opportunity to own this unique Amish property situated on +/- 86.5 acres in North Mississippi.

This versatile property features beautiful rolling fields, a scenic pond, multiple workshops, large pole barns, chicken coops, livestock areas, storage buildings, and an impressive barn setup ready for a variety of agricultural, homestead, farming, or recreational uses.

The property offers many possibilities with plenty of room for equipment, animals, gardening, farming operations, or simply enjoying peaceful country living.

Whether you’re looking for a working farm, investment opportunity, or private rural retreat, this property has the infrastructure and acreage to make it happen.

The Home

There’s one catch with this listing – there are no photos from inside the house. That makes this the first in the series we’ve done that has no interior shots, but I thought it was interesting enough to look at anyway. In part that’s because we do get a look at and inside several of the family’s businesses on the property.

This is a 1,700 square foot home, with five bedrooms, and as with the others, no bathrooms. That’s the norm in the very plain Swartzentruber Amish communities, where they use outhouses.

The home has nice wide porches on multiple sides, and they get plenty of use. Cinder blocks make functional stairs on this side.

A lot gets done on the back porch. Laundry and even washing up with water heated in the hot water stove at left. Wood for burning it in a pile at left. They might do some canning and other food processing out here as well. Laundry gets hung up on the pulley wheel line at right.

Here’s another view of that pulley clothesline and buckets of freshly picked cucumbers. This family does a lot with vegetables, which we’ll see more of shortly.

The Three Family Businesses

Home businesses are very common in this community (as I saw firsthand on a past visit to the area). From what I can tell, this property has at least three of them.

The first is a furniture shop, in the green building below at left. The red two-story building next to it is another shop structure.

Inside are rustic hickory pieces, including what appears to be a bunk bed in progress. Lot of interesting things in this shot. You’ve got several more chairs, and a couple of treadle sewing machines. This is where the family’s hunter or hunters hang some of their trophies.

The other end of the shop has some Adirondack-style gliders, and a table set. I like the attractive reddish stain they’ve used on these pieces.

The second business is this small green shop by the lane. Let’s have a look inside.

In here we see it sells a variety of things. The first thing you notice are the spiky-looking rugs, a common type made in plainer communities especially, typically using pieces of the same material used for making dresses and other clothing. These tap some colors like pink and bright green which wouldn’t be used for dresses in this community.

We’ve also got birdhouses and canned goods, and what I believe are plastic containers holding bars of soap (see the lime green and fuchsia-colored bars in the center of the photo), though I might be wrong. A sign at the counter asks for egg cartons. And there are several pieces of squash, so it looks like this family sells produce and eggs here too.

A sign on the big barn, which you can’t see too well, advertises the rugs.

The third business is a sawmill, sitting on a large lot, with plenty of room for trucks to bring in logs.

A sawmill is a lower-end wood processing business more commonly seen in plainer Amish communities, as it generally requires simpler equipment to run than, say, a higher-end custom furniture business.

Around the Farm

A pair of buggies can be seen inside and outside this barn. Note there’s no orange slow-moving vehicle triangle, which this group does not use – just strips of white reflective tape.

The lane past the red shop building, with a purple martin house on a pole at left. The Amish in general like having these birds around, for their voracious appetites for pesky insects.

Now we’re getting into the source of all the produce that likely passes through that little green shop we saw above.

And how about this aerial shot giving you a better sense of the size of this other plot.

Young corn coming up. These photos were clearly taken earlier in the year. One thing you do notice if you visit this community is how flat the land is in this area. That must be pretty convenient for farming.

Open pasture.

And for comparison, this is the larger “scenic pond” mentioned in the listing. It is pretty.

Pulling back, you can see the pond in relation to the farmstead, with other Amish farms around it.

So even though this one omitted interior home shots, I still think it is a pretty interesting property to look at, and I hope you thought so too. So how much for 86.5 acres, a farmhouse, and all the rest?

This property is listed at $499,900, down from $529,000 (the price was cut just on the same day I’m posting this). It’s represented by Hank White of United Country Compass Realty Group.
