Many factors can come in to play when cars hit Amish buggies. In a wreck this morning in Schuyler County, Missouri, it appears that the sun was to blame. More details from KTVO:

QUEEN CITY, Mo. — A two-vehicle crash in Schuyler County Friday morning injured the driver of a horse-drawn buggy.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol trooper who worked the wreck told KTVO it happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Route W on the west edge of Queen City.

The officer said the driver of a minivan, a 22-year-old woman from Greentop, Missouri, was traveling east on Route W when she was impaired by sun glare.

The van then rear-ended an Amish buggy.

The man’s injuries are described as “moderate”. Good news is that children that were on the buggy were not hurt. Same goes for the van driver, but that is usually the case in these types of crashes. The story provides no details on the horse.

Sun glare can be a culprit in some Amish buggy crashes. Tricky times for this are early morning and around sunset, for obvious reasons.

This morning’s crash, happening close to 7:30 AM, would have been not long after sunrise in the Queen City area, which today was at 7:05 AM. Something to be aware of if you’re out on the road at those times.

Schuyler County has seen some scary – and unusual – buggy mishaps

Schuyler County is home to several Amish settlements. This accident happened closest to the Greentop community, a settlement shared with neighboring Audair County. This community has made news in recent years for some eyebrow-raising stories involving buggy mishaps.

Back in 2022, an Amish woman and boy were injured in a freak accident, when the buggy they were traveling in fell 20 feet off of a bridge with no guard railings. The buggy landed upside down in a creek, with the woman suffering serious injuries.

Then in 2025, the community again made news when two small Amish children were run over by horse-drawn vehicles in the community – all in the space of one week. Both children, thankfully, it appears survived.

There were no children on this buggy when hit, it was only the driver who suffered severe injuries. The horse was not killed and was found and returned to his home.
