Amish Mother Ruth Miller, Facing Murder Charges In Death of 4-Year-Old Son, Booked Into Jail; No Bail Set (Yet)

Amish mother Ruth R. Miller was booked into jail on Monday, following a stay at a mental health facility.

Miller has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder in the death of her four-year-old son Vincen, following events at a Tuscarawas County, Ohio lake in which she allegedly threw the boy into the water as a “price to pay” for failing tests of faith.

Her husband Marcus J. Miller also ended up dying in the lake, allegedly for related reasons when he attempted to test his faith by swimming to a deep part of the lake.

Deputies responded to the scene after Ruth Miller intentionally drove a golf cart, carrying three other children, into the lake on August 23rd.

Following “concerning statements” and erratic behavior, she was taken to a locked mental health facility, evaluated, and questioned. Her time at the mental health facility apparently ended yesterday.

Miller was originally scheduled to have her arraignment on Friday. However, that was cancelled with no explanation given at the time.

Looking at the update to the court docket today at New Philadelphia Municipal Court, it looks like her stay in the mental health facility was the reason for the arraignment not happening (I’ve bolded it below, and you’ll find the court docket screenshot below that):

Will bail be granted?

Miller had apparently been scheduled for a bail hearing today (Tuesday Sep. 2), but that did not happen. Reporting at WTRF provides these details:

Officials say Ruth Miller was scheduled for a bail hearing on Tuesday but it was continued until Friday. No bail has been established at this time.

Miller arrived at the Tuscarawas County Jail on Monday, September 1, 202,5 from the hospital and remains an inmate at the jail.

The continued bail hearing is tentatively scheduled for 9:00 am at the New Philadelphia Municipal Court ,but could be cancelled if the Grad Jury Indicts her before then.

So in other words, the next scheduled appearance is this Friday, September 5th, at which she could be granted bail. However, that might not happen, if she is indicted before then.

That appears to be the bulk of the update on this case at this time. As it stands, it also appears that autopsies to determine the manner of death of Vincen and Marcus have not yet been conducted.

Update – September 3

Here is an explanation via WKYC as to why Miller faces two counts of aggravated murder, which sounds like what I was getting at in my last post.

Both counts apply to the death of her son (not her husband):

The Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office explained that the two counts of aggravated murder against Miller pertain to her son, with a finding of “prior calculation and design” and a finding that the child was under 13 years of age.

What sort of sentence might Ruth Miller face if convicted of aggravated murder? They also elaborate on that:

If convicted of aggravated murder, Miller would face a minimum of a life sentence with parole eligibility after 20 years and a maximum sentence of life without parole. Prosecutors add that the remaining counts are misdemeanors of the first degree, each with maximum sentences of 180 days’ incarceration.

If you look at the court docket screenshot above, it appears that Miller is represented by attorney Ian Friedman.

Googling a bit, I found there is a defense lawyer by the name of Ian Friedman, based in Cleveland, who is described on his site as “one of the most sought after criminal defense lawyers in the country.” He also seems to have made a lot of appearances in media, including television, radio, and in print.

    Ruth Miller Case

    Hello All,
Must admit I am completely unfamiliar with Ohio law. So my comments are from
those of a lay person, so to speak. This is a tough case from the get-go as it involves an Amish family/community. Firstly, as Mrs. Miller has no prior criminal record that we know of, normally she would be allowed bail and go home to wait until her trial begins before returning to court. However, with Sheriff Campbell stating that she tried hiding in the bushes and made inconsistent statements, it’s very worrisome (at least to me) to think that if she IS granted bail, that she might simply walk away from home and end up who knows where. Secondly, as I am more concerned about her mental state, I would advocate for “remand to custody” until her trial. And I certainly hope she continues to get the help she needs & deserves, regardless of what the Grand Jury says & how the judge in this case rules. The legal system is hard enough for the average person to try to navigate. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for an Amish person. Finally, my sincere hope is that Mrs. Miller goes (at least for a time) to a mental health facility where she can improve at her own pace without fear of being hurt in one of our nation’s prisons. Seems to me she is quite confused & unable to understand what is happening to her. She deserves the same courtesy and respect afforded all other Americans. Yes, she (allegedly) committed a terrible act, but I believe that Mr./Mrs. Miller believed that they were acting on orders from God. It can be hard for many people to try to wrap their heads around, but it does actually happen to a great many people. I wish we had more compassion in our country. Example, in England, if she were convicted of killing her child, she’d most likely be sent home and given mental health support for several years. Thanks for letting me have my say. And thank you, Erik, for being so attentive to this case. Prayers for the family & Amish community.
