A Visit To An Amish Produce Stand & (Nearly) Year-Round Greenhouse – 23 Photos

Quick note from Erik: as you will see by the author attribution, this post is by Don Burke. Don has been contributing posts and photos for over ten years now, and I’m happy to say you’ll now be able to find Don’s past posts collected here.
Look for more from Don in the coming days and weeks – he has some interesting ones coming up, including an interview with a former Amish school teacher, an in-depth look at Amish transport, and more!
And a technical note: previously I’ve usually intro-ed Don’s posts, but going forward I don’t expect to do that much, if any, since posts authored by him will appear under his name.
Anyone venturing eastward off Highway 190 about five miles south of Jamesport, Missouri, could possibly find themselves at an Amish home and business called Clear Creek Produce.
Interestingly, the father of this Amish family is listed in the Missouri Amish Directory as a produce grower…and a Maytag washing machine repairman.

Clear Creek has been a regular seller at the bustling Amish-run North Missouri Produce Auction in Jamesport.

But Clear Creek also sells through its charming little roadside stand beside the quaint gravel county road that runs through the place. The stand is set up for self-service when none of the family is close-by to help.

As the pictures show, the stand specializes in both fresh and canned goods produced on the place.

Besides the plot of land dedicated to raising vegetables, Clear Creek also operates greenhouses. The owner shared with me that while the growing season for field-grown items is limited by weather and seasons, he can grow virtually the whole year in the greenhouse.

He described that by staggering his tomato plantings he can have fresh tomatoes almost year ‘round – some years even picking vine-ripe tomatoes as late in the year as December.

But for at least portions of the year the bulk of his greenhouses are not dedicated to veggies, but to flowers.

One day in April a mutual friend and local tour-guide in Jamesport got permission for me and my camera to visit Clear Creek to capture some of the beauties then in bloom.

So, if you’re traveling near Jamesport on a spring day, Clear Creek Produce is a great little place to stop by, whether you’re in the mood for something pretty or something tasty – or both!

“I’m just here for the food.” Never have truer words been uttered! lol. That place looks perfectly wonderful!! I’ll have to put it on my “Bucket List.” I have the feeling the food there would taste much better than what I can get at my local grocery store. Thanks, Erik.
Don’t know that I’ve been to Clear Creek Produce, but I have been to the Jamesport Produce Auction several times. It’s a great place to get produce in bulk for food preservation and sharing with friends!
I appreciate these photos by Don; he captures the warm, inviting, beautiful essence of Jamesport, Missouri, one of the most charming Amish communities in the state.
A garden is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow. – Here is to warmer (for those of us in Winter Storm Fern’s path) times ahead!
