Snow Plow Spooks Amish Horse, Sends Buggy Into Ditch – Then Comes To The Rescue

Here’s a buggy incident with a “happy ending”. A plow (assuming they mean snow plow) spooked an Amish buggy horse, sending the buggy straight into a ditch. But the driver noticed, and stopped to help. More from WGRZ:

CATTARAUGUS COUNTY, N.Y. — The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office said no one was injured after an Amish buggy recently went into a ditch.

Initially reported as a crash between an Amish buggy and a plow truck following a 911 call, the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s deputies quickly went to the scene at Cherry Creek Hill Road in the Town of Leon.

Upon arrival, they found that “the horse was spooked by the passing plow and ran into the ditch.” The plow driver saw what happened and stopped to help.

They got the buggy out of the ditch and all was okay (and by the way it’s nice to cover a buggy incident where no one, horse included, got hurt).

Cattaraugus County, NY is home to four separate Amish communities, totaling over 3,000 people

Buggy horses have been known to “spook”

As noted, this was initially thought to be a collision, but that wasn’t the case. Buggy horses “spook” sometimes, often due to loud noises (or sometimes, due to “kiddos” – or even a cow). Perhaps it was the noise, or possibly the visual of the plow, which unnerved the horse and caused it to bolt.

This is something to be aware of if you are driving a vehicle with a loud engine in Amish Country. Also use caution when passing that you give adequate room when pulling back into the lane of travel. That may mean waiting for a while longer for better visibility so you’re not doing a “tight pass”.

Good on the plow driver for being aware of what was going on around him, and stopping to do the right thing. These plow drivers, by the way, are doing great work out there this time of year.

They were some of my favorite people to see on the roads on this recent very snowy Amish trip I was on. The photo above is one of many plows I passed in Ohio and Pennsylvania.
