Semi Hits TWO Buggies (One Towing Another); 61-Year-Old Amish Woman Injured

This buggy wreck was both “unusual” and “usual”, for lack of a better word.

Making it unusual is that the buggy struck was actually towing another buggy. So two buggies were hit.

Making it “usual” (at least with how things have gone recently), is that it happened in Michigan, specifically Gladwin County, which has seen a number of bad buggy wrecks over the past several months.

From WWMT:

GLADWIN COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — One Amish woman was sent to the hospital with non-life threatening following a crash with a buggy and a semi-truck Tuesday morning in Beaverton Township, according to the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office.

It happened around 8 a.m. near Beaverton Road west of South Bard Road.

The buggy, occupied by a woman, 61, and man, 17, was traveling eastbound on Beaverton.

It was towing another unoccupied buggy, the sheriff’s office said.

The buggies were struck from behind by a 2018, International, semi-truck, also traveling eastbound on Beaverton.

Fortunately it sounds like her injuries are recoverable. That might not be what you’d think if you heard that a semi ran into an Amish buggy. Always count your blessings.

The 17-year-old (not sure why they term him a “man”) and the driver of the semi were uninjured. As you can tell from the photos, this is a Swartzentruber Amish community, a group which do not use SMV triangles or battery lighting.

Improved visibility from such accessories might have prevented this accident, but no one can say for sure, especially since buggies with lights also get hit. The accident happened relatively early in the morning, when visibility can be poorer (obscured by glare, etc.).

These images show the buggy that was being towed. In the photo at the top of this post, you can see the wooden apparatus that was used to pull this one.

So two buggies will need repairs (assuming they’re salvageable), but at least no one was killed this time – unlike the crash in this same county several weeks ago.
