Inside A Simple Amish Country Store (7 Photos)
Jim Halverson gives us a look inside a plain and simple Amish country store in Gladwin County, Michigan.
Gladwin County is home to a pair of Amish communities. Last autumn, we had a nice look at a Swartzentruber Amish barn-raising from this area.
And we’ve also seen inside a Gladwin County Amish home, from a group similar to the conservative Kenton, Ohio Amish.

Jim writes that “I came across that store last year when they were having an auction.”
The view from behind the counter.
We see the old-fashioned register…and a more modern math helper just to its right. That scale is an old-timer too. I wonder when it was produced.
Here’s a closer look at the cheese price list. Those look like some pretty good prices (the “#” sign meaning per pound, I assume). I see a lot of my favorites on this list. Green Onion would be worth a try, too.
Looking at the counter from the other direction, we see the young person running the store. Amish families often have their children – some of them quite young – help out by minding the store or farm stand.
A look down the aisle. Here I see homemade canned goods, bread, molasses(?), some bulk packaged baking ingredients, and in the back, some regular store cereals like Corn Pops and Chex.
And a closer look at the canned goods. Pickled red beets, tomatoes, apple butter are among the homemade items. They also carry something from the Walnut Creek brand.
Jim adds: “They also raise turkeys, so strictly for the experience (it’s a 90 minute drive just for a turkey) we went up there last Saturday and ordered one for Thanksgiving – slaughtered on the Tuesday before and pick it up the same day. We will see how it goes.”
