Amish Homes

An Amish organic dairy farm in the perfectly-named New Holstein, Wisconsin just listed for $1,420,000 — and no, as you might expect, electricity is not included. This is one of the highest-priced Amish properties we’ve covered in this series. We did recently see a $1.5 million Amish farmstead in Kentucky. Pricewise, this Wisconsin property is in that ballpark, but is a somewhat different kind of…

Here’s something you don’t come across every day — an Amish homestead for sale in Mississippi. The Randolph community in Pontotoc County is one of only two Amish settlements in the entire Deep South. It was founded in 1995, primarily by settlers from the community at Ethridge, Tennessee  — and close ties between the two communities remain. This is a Swartzentruber Amish community — one…

Here we have an “ultra-basic” Amish home in the Swartzentruber community at Cynthiana, Kentucky (Harrison County). It’s a small, very plain Amish community of under 100 people, and it looks like one of the families here is selling their home and moving away. As in a lot of cases, in these smaller communities Amish will list their homes in hopes of attracting a non-Amish buyer….

Jim Halverson sends along this week’s Amish home – and it’s quite a contrast to what we looked at last week. Where that Maine Amish home without plumbing epitomized a plain Amish way of living, this week’s solar-powered barndominium in Millersburg, Indiana showcases an Amish lifestyle strikingly different – and you could certainly say more modern. Now, these are still considered Old Order Amish –…

This Amish home in Jefferson, Maine (Lincoln County) is very traditional – no public electricity of course, but also no plumbing. But despite what sounds like a very basic setup, it is cozy and cute as a button, inside and out. One reason I call it “cute as a button” is its charming interior. This next photo, of the living room, is a preview. We’ll…

We recently looked at an eight-bedroom Amish home with just one bathroom – which I imagine many found to be an extreme bedroom-to-bathroom ratio. But this Owingsville, Kentucky Amish property one-ups that one – having a whopping 10 bedrooms – but no bathroom whatsoever (outhouse is what they’d use). There are one or two caveats here – the bedroom count includes the main house, as…

Here’s an interesting Amish property in Kentucky which stands out for several reasons. This is a sprawling cattle and horse farm in Metcalfe County, Kentucky – home, since the early 1990s, to an Amish community now over 250 people in size. The place is set on a hill and has some nice views of the surrounding countryside – and a charming interior with a look…

This week’s Amish home, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, is a family home sitting on a 10-acre lot. And true to Amish form, the family is a big one – the house has a whopping eight bedrooms –  but just one bathroom. More on that below. Here’s the full description: Discover the perfect blend of craftsmanship, privacy, and land stewardship with this new custom Amish-built home, thoughtfully…

Today’s Amish home is a “sister” to one we looked at back in November, in the same community in Lucas County, Iowa (Chariton). That one was described as a “Charming Farmstead” in the listing. This is a similarly-charming home. But there is one detail that would make someone scanning through these photos (but not reading the text) raise an eyebrow 🙂 More on that below…

Today’s Amish home is in Middlebury, Indiana (part of the large northern Indiana Amish settlement) and gives us a look at what life in a more materially progressive community looks like. There are a number of classic Amish accents in this home – combined with more modern ones as well. Together it creates the feel of a “classic-modern” Amish home (hat tip to Jim Halverson…
