New From Ben & Rose: “Lonely Tombs”

It’s been about a month since their last release, but Ben and Rose are back with a new song just out this afternoon.
After covering a contemporary Christian song in “Mighty To Save“, the Amish-roots couple shift back to country music, striking a somber chord with this cover of a song popularized by Hank Williams – “Lonely Tombs”.
Shot in part with the backdrop of a Pennsylvania cemetery, this is another song, like “Here Today“, reflecting on mortality.

While the visuals and subject matter may be somber, the music itself is upbeat, striking an almost playful tone, especially with the nice dobro playing sprinkled in.
While Hank Williams is popularly associated with the song, hymnary.org puts the author of “Lonely Tombs” as one William M. Golden, dating to 1918. Here is Hank Williams’ rendition for comparison with Ben & Rose’s (embedded at bottom).
And like “Here Today”, this one leaves us on an upbeat, hopeful note – “how sweet is the rest in our beautiful, heavenly home.”
“Lonely Tombs” Lyrics
I was strollin’ one day, in a lonely graveyard
When a voice from the tomb, seemed to say
I once lived as you live, walked and talked as you talk
But from Earth, I was soon called awayOh, those tombs (oh, those tombs)
Lonely tombs (lonely tombs)
Seemed to say in a low gentle tone
Oh, how sweet (oh, how sweet)
Is the rest (is the rest)
In our beautiful, heavenly home

Every voice from the tomb, seemed to whisper and say
Living man you must soon follow me
And I thought as I looked, on those cold marble slabs
What a dark lonely place that must beOh, those tombs (oh, those tombs)
Lonely tombs (lonely tombs)
Seemed to say in a low gentle tone
Oh, how sweet (oh, how sweet)
Is the rest (is the rest)
In our beautiful, heavenly homeThen I came to the place where my mother was laid
And in silence I stood by her tomb
And her voice seemed to say in a low gentle tone
“I am safe with my Savior at home”Oh, those tombs (oh, those tombs)
Lonely tombs (lonely tombs)
Seemed to say in a low gentle tone
Oh, how sweet (oh, how sweet)
Is the rest (is the rest)
In our beautiful, heavenly home

Another lovely song to add to the list. Have a listen here:

Lonely Tombs
Another beautiful song from Ben & Rose. I could listen to them sing all day long. Ben & Rose keep up the wonderful singing & harmony. I’ve enjoyed every song I have heard you two sing. God bless both of you
Music
I especially like your duets of gospel songs particularlly what we used to call Sunday School songs. The message is in the music. Your harmony is second to none. Please continue the excellent work. I especially like the instrumentation with each song. The sound of the instruments do not overide your beautiful harmony.
Changes
I have noticed changes with Ben and Rose. Are they still part of the amish community.
