Autumn Images From An Amish Corner Of Kentucky (15 Photos)

Reflecting the beauty of the autumn season, today we have another nice photo set by Don Burke, featuring some fall sights from one of Kentucky’s 50+ Amish settlements.

As you can see, autumn was in full effect when he took these (this set is not from this year, but some years back).

These are from Crittenden County, Kentucky (Marion), home to a well-entrenched community of around 500 Amish people. In fact, it’s one of the state’s older Amish places, established nearly half-a-century ago.

Children walking to (or probably, from) school, lunch boxes in hand.

Several of the community’s businesses.

This property houses more than one – a harness shop, and homemade foods. I would not leave this place empty-handed!

You can notice signs suggesting this isn’t the plainest of Amish groups. Looking at the buggies for electric lighting vs. lanterns is usually one quick place to check.

Here’s a front view showing electric lights, and closed fronts. Note the sign tucked away at left on the inner wall. Looks like they have sold at least one horse here before.

The homes are simple in design, but not the plainest of all. The yards with lawns and landscaping are one suggestion of that.

This place appears to have a nice pumpkin crop.

I saved my favorite pic for last – two young fellas rollerblading down the road. Looks like they have their non-wheeled footwear in their hands.

Hey, Eric is this a community with Aylmer Ontario roots? I can tell by the buggy that it most likely is.
Thanks!
Hey Daniel, this community actually has roots in Dover, Delaware. A good resource for looking up communities affiliations is the book, Amish & Mennonite Settlements of America A Guide to North America’s Horse and Buggy Groups and a Directory of Die Botschaft Scribes 2022 by Jacob Stoltzfus. This book has a short description for every Amish and horse and buggy Mennonite community that existed at the time of publication. There is also a section in the back of the book that tells you the affiliation of all the Amish communities.

Dear Erik,
I always enjoy these photographs taken by Dan Burke. Just lovely. Intersperse these among other items as much as you are able. Thank you for sharing them with us. I love seeing the different settlements through the careful eyes of a photographer.

Thank you Don Burke for these pictures. I visited Marion and Matoon some years back and that trip, those memories are so very special to me. I hope to get back there one day. Thanks so much.
