West VA Amish

Amish have had a continuous presence in West Virginia since 1996.  Despite 15+ years in the state, and neighboring the two states with the largest Amish populations,  the West Virginia Amish population has not grown larger than a handful.  Amish can be found in Mason County and Summers County.  Read more on West Virginia Amish.

Amish woodworking

How did Amish become prominent in the woodworking and furniture industry?  Amish long based their lives around an agricultural existence, and in general still do.   Amish have large families, typically between 6 and 8 children on average.  With most Amish youth choosing to join the church of their parents, the Amish population is growing at a rapid rate.  Farms can be difficult to purchase, particularly given that established Amish communities experience price pressure resulting in high land prices.

Amish shops provide furniture for WV residents and others across America

While some Amish choose to move to less-populated areas (West Virginia is a good example of a state offering more affordable land), many have adapted occupationally, shifting into small businesses which require less capital to start-up and run.  Retail shops, carpentry, and bulk food stores are among the many Amish enterprises;  furniture making is one of the most important, involving thousands of Amish across North America.

Quality furniture in a variety of styles

Amish woodcraft comes in a wide range of styles and designs.  Amish craft everything from contemporary and urban pieces to classic and traditional styles such as Shaker, Mission, Craftsman, Queen Anne, and other designs.  Amish furniture is often made of solid hardwood (oak, cherry, maple, walnut, hickory), with some furniture constructed of softwoods as well, such as pine and cedar.

Amish also craft rustic furniture, such as hickory rockers, along with a range of outdoor furniture, either made from wood such as pine or from environmentally friendly poly lumber.   Amish furniture has earned a reputation for quality craftsmanship;  some Amish furniture retailers even advertise their goods as “heirloom quality”.

Where to buy Amish furniture in West Virginia

Amish furniture shoppers in WV have a few options.  First, at least 3 Amish furniture retailers are found in the Mountain State, offering the chance to browse a wide selection of furniture at a convenient location.  Some buyers prefer visiting an Amish shop in person; while many produce furniture on a strictly wholesale basis, certain shops do sell their furniture retail to the public.

Some WV locations will also be within range of retailers and Amish communities in other states (see the Amish Furniture guide main directory for more). All things considered, you may prefer finding furniture from the comfort of home. You can order a wide variety of Amish & Mennonite-made furniture items from Dutchcrafters.com, a large retailer delivering to locations across the nation, including West Virginia.
