Amish in Ohio

Amish can be found across the Buckeye State, in around 70 communities.  By far the largest is the Holmes County Amish community, which sprawls into four neighboring counties. Holmes County is home to over 40,000 Amish, and many furniture craftsmen.

amish communities ohio
Amish communities can be found across Ohio

Geauga County in northeast Ohio hosts the second-largest Amish community in the state, and home to numerous Amish wood shops as well.  Other notable Amish communities in Ohio can be found near towns such as Lodi, Belleville (Knox County), in Ashland County, Hardin County, and numerous others. Read more on Ohio Amish.

Furniture-making and family business

Amish furniture making has thrived across the nation, but particularly in Ohio.  Furniture shops have sprung up across the state in Amish communities, with heavy concentrations of woodworkers in areas of Holmes County such as Mt. Hope and Walnut Creek.  In large communities such as Holmes County and Geauga County, land for farming can be hard to come by at an affordable price.  Furniture craftsmanship offers an alternative occupation which requires relatively little start-up money to begin.

Amish furniture shops are found, typically, near Amish homes.  Amish woodworkers range from small family-oriented operations to those employing 3 dozen or more employees.  Some Amish shops outgrow their home locations and eventually set up in large “business parks” set up by entrepreneurs in some Amish communities.   At the same time, woodworking is very much an “at-home” occupation, allowing for family involvement.

Amish youth learn a trade in their father’s woodshops from an early age. Since Amish finish school at age 14 or 15, Amish youth soon enter the work force, honing manual skills they’ll use later in life.  In many cases furniture making truly is a family endeavor, with not only sons being involved but also wives and daughters, some of whom may do bookwork for the business, help with customers, or in some cases even manual tasks.

Amish craftsmanship

Amish furniture enjoys a positive reputation.  There are a few reasons why.

  1. First, Amish furniture is generally considered well-made.  Amish craftsmen accumulate furniture-making experience early in life.  Amish tap into networks of fellow craftsmen to develop skills and learn new methods of construction.  Furniture makers maintain formal and informal relationships with one another.  Additionally, Amish believe strongly in a job well-done.  While there are always bad apples in any group, Amish craftsmen are typically considered trustworthy and devoted to doing a quality job for their customers.
  2. Secondly, Amish use high-quality materials to construct their furniture.  The first thing typically mentioned in Amish furniture advertisements is the use of quality hardwoods.  These include varieties such as cherry, walnut, oak, black walnut, quartersawn oak, maple, and more.  Amish use soft woods such as pine and cedar as well, and also create rustic hickory furniture.  In the outdoor furniture category, Amish use both natural wood and durable “poly” material.
  3. Finally, Amish craftsmen are flexible and adaptable.  They create not only traditional styles, but more contemporary designs as well.  It’s common to see styles such as Mission, Craftsman, Shaker, Colonial, Prairie, Arts and Crafts, Queen Anne and others being made by Amish woodworkers.   Amish furniture craftsmen also do much custom work for their clients, including nearly any sort of furniture as well as kitchen cabinets.

Buying Amish furniture in Ohio

amish furniture showroom ohio
Amish furniture showroom near Mount Hope, Ohio

Amish furniture seekers in Ohio have a plethora of options.  First, with the large number of Amish woodworkers scattered across the state, visiting an Amish community and Amish-run wood shop is an attractive option.  This gives a potential buyer a chance to meet the owner and craftsmen, and also to see where furniture is made.

This isn’t always an option, as some Amish make furniture strictly on a wholesale basis, but a sizeable contingent also build furniture for a retail market.  Buying Amish furniture direct from an Ohio manufacturer is a unique experience distinct from the big-box retail option.

Secondly, Ohio Amish furniture retailers sell Plain craftsmanship across the state.  The advantage of buying from an Ohio Amish furniture showroom is the close proximity to many Ohio cities such as Cleveland, Cincinatti, Columbus, and many others.  Amish furniture sellers often maintain a large stock in their showrooms, providing a wide selection for their customers.

Additionally, many retailers can arrange custom work by an Amish craftsman.  Finally, Ohio residents can buy Amish furniture direct via an online business. Internet-based Amish furniture sellers maintain connections with Amish craftsman and can provide the opportunity to browse a vast range of furniture pieces online in the comfort of the home.  Online dealers typically ship Amish furniture to Ohio addresses and elsewhere in the country.

    4. Wood Products Source

Wood products manufacturing in conjunction with an Amish community

      Eric, or anyone else,
We are looking for a new site to manufacture wood products, likely in PA or Ohio, in proximity to small to mid sized hardwood sawmills, and amongst an Amish community, where we could build a win/win situation for all involved. Currently some longer established communities are rather fully employed with the improving economy. The most conservative have issues with working in an electrified building, and will not operate a forklift, etc.

      Desirable attributes in order of importance;

An Amish community welcoming employment, or even partnership
An existing building with possibility of expansion
      Favorable zoning, local municipal relations
      Three phase electric
      Natural gas
      Workforce having some woodworking experience
Existing, or closeby lumber dry kiln
      Sawmills nearby
Private hauler transportation options to other major Amish settlements.

We are willing to be flexible in organizing a situation which is non-threatening, and genuinely beneficial to the local Amish community. If anyone knows of a community which could benefit, please contact us at woodproductsource@gmail.com to begin discussion.

    7. Live More Simply!

      Hi Erik!

My name is Kacey and I am the travel blogger behind The Drifter Collective. I am also a Pennsylvania native, which brought me to your site!

I have always been interested in learning about the people behind the names of cities and towns that I visit, one of them being The Amish! I find it to be a culture that not many people know about, but should, mainly because there are a lot of lifestyle factors and trends they follow that I believe individuals could benefit from!

I originally wanted to reach out to see if I would be able to write an article for you to publish and share with your readers, but before I send you some ideas of titles and topics, I wanted to simply offer you a resource to add to your site! 🙂

      Here it is: https://www.amishoutletstore.com/blog/17-amish-secrets-make-life-easier/

If interested, I thought you might like this site that offers helpful information about the background of their culture, tips for living more simply, handcrafted products they make, and more! Since they make handcrafted furniture, I thought it might be beneficial to add to this page of yours: https://amishamerica.com/amish-furniture-ohio/

I am just looking for ways to bond with like-minded individuals, bloggers and travelers who are interested in the same things as I am!

Thanks Erik. I hope you enjoy!

      Hello,
I own a store in southern Maine selling Amish furniture mostly Hickory. I’m interested in expanding and would be interested in connections to Amish furniture makers in Ohio that make hickory furniture.

Look forward to hearing from you,

      Sharon
