Amish Furniture – Maryland

Mechanicsville Grey BuggyMaryland is home to a small but well-established Amish population. Furniture crafted by Amish woodworkers can be found in the state in close proximity to Baltimore, Annapolis, Columbia, Germantown, and other cities, as well as Washington DC.

Amish-made home decor can be purchased in numerous Maryland venues, including direct from Amish-owned furniture shops as well as via non-Amish dealers.  Amish wood products are known for their high quality (typically solid hardwood construction using oak, cherry, maple, walnut, and other woods), and diverse styles (Mission, Shaker, Queen Anne being among the most popular).

Plain artisans in the state specialize in crafting furniture pieces for every room of the house, including the bedroom, living room, kitchen (cabinets and other pieces), office, dining room, children’s room, as well as outdoor furniture. Read more about the Amish and woodworking in the state.

Maryland Amish woodworking tradition

When it comes to the Amish, Maryland is often overlooked in favor of its northern neighbor, Pennsylvania, the state long most-associated with Plain people.  However, Maryland’s current Amish presence has existed since 1940, when a group of Amish moved from Lancaster County to settle in St. Mary’s County in southern Maryland off the Chesapeake Bay.  The St. Mary’s Amish community has since grown to approximately 1,000 individuals, among which can be found a number of woodworking businesses (read more on Maryland Amish).

Yoder’s Furniture, one of a number of Maryland Amish woodworkers

Amish have found woodworking and other small businesses a practical alternative to farming, in the face of rising land prices (seen especially in East Coast states such as Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware) and a rapidly growing Amish population.  Woodworking and other home enterprises offer Amish the chance to maintain a stay-at-home lifestyle, in close proximity to family, while granting parents the ability to supervise children and provide opportunities to develop a work ethic while helping to operate the business.

Amish have responded to growing demand for their furniture by expanding furniture lines from traditional styles such as Mission, Queen Anne, Shaker, and Craftsman to more contemporary and daring designs.  Rather than being stuck in the mold as Amish are sometimes incorrectly perceived, Amish wood craftsmen in Maryland and other states embody a spirit of innovation which leads them to create unique and compelling furniture designs.  Indeed, some Amish see creativity in design as key to staying ahead in the competitive furniture market, where they face pressures not only from fellow Amish woodworkers but English furniture businesses, including larger mass-produced furniture lines, as well as cheaper Asian furniture imports.

Key to the Amish advantage in furniture craftsmanship is the perception of their woodworking as being of high or higher quality than that of competitors–an impression often grounded in reality.  Amish furniture is commonly advertised as being made of solid hard wood construction, utilizing wood varieties such as ash, maple, black maple, cherry, poplar, oak, quartersawn oak, as well as pine and rustic styles such as hickory-style furniture (hickory rockers and end tables being among the popular pieces in this genre).

Where to buy Maryland Amish furniture?

If you’re looking to buy Amish furniture in Maryland, you have a number of choices.  As a state with a significant Amish population, Marylanders have the option of purchasing direct from an Amish furniture manufacturer.  The most obvious choice for such an approach would be to visit the Amish community in St. Mary’s County (near the town of Mechanicsville), home to 8 congregations of Amish.  There are a number of Amish furniture producers in this settlement.

The other two Amish communities in Maryland–at Cecilton in eastern Maryland, and Oakland in the western end of the state–are much smaller and less likely to provide as great a range of Amish furniture options.  Depending on your location in the state, Maryland residents are also withing reasonable drive of Amish settlements in Pennsylvania, the most obvious of which being the Lancaster County Amish community, home to dozens of Amish furniture producers, cabinet makers, and wood craftsmen.

Old Line State residents can also pay a visit to one of a number of Amish furniture showrooms across the state, within reach of Baltimore, Annapolis, and other Maryland cities, along with Washington D.C.  Non-Amish businesspeople often pair with Amish furniture makers to sell and distribute Amish-made furniture.  Through this system, Amish furniture has been made available in areas where no Amish live, and often many miles distant from the nearest Amish community.  A final option for Maryland residents is to order Amish furniture direct from an online Amish furniture seller.  Online Amish furniture businesses typically provide a range of shipping options, providing delivery to Maryland addresses as well as most US destinations.

      Table Top

      Hello,

I could not find a way to contact to ask the question…..

I have wrought iron coffee/end tables with glass tops and really want to replace the tops with a piece of oak to match a solid oak entertainment center (restoration hardware) I have. I am looking for someone that can make the tops needed (3) in oak. I will find a local refinisher if necessary. If you can do this or know of someone local to Maryland, please let me know. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
