12-Year-Old Amish Girl Injured, Horse Killed After Pickup Driver “Drifts” Onto Shoulder
This happened yesterday in Otsego County, New York. I called an Amish friend living in this area earlier today. He informed me this was someone not from his, but one of the other communities in the county (there are three Amish settlements in Otsego County).
Though it’s not his immediate community, he had actually already been to the hospital to visit her. The good news is that it sounds like her injuries are not serious. From Syracuse.com:
Pittsfield, N.Y. — A 12-year-old girl was injured Thursday when a pickup truck collided with a horse and buggy in Otsego County, state police said.
The crash happened around 3:18 p.m. on Route 13 near Mooretown Road in the town of Pittsfield, according to Trooper Aga Tinker, a State Police spokesperson.
The Ford pickup was traveling east on Route 13 when the driver drifted to the right and struck the Amish buggy that was traveling in the same direction on the shoulder of the road, troopers said.
There were four children in the buggy.
The 12-year-old girl, from New Berlin, was taken to Bassett Hospital with injuries. Troopers later said her injuries were minor.
The other children are ages 14, 9, and 7. Though the girl it looks like will be alright, that wasn’t the case for the horse, which died from its injuries.
The driver, a 26-year-old man from Morris, was not injured. He received a citation, though none of the several reports on the incident explain what it was for – or what may have led to the “drifting”. That is about the extent of the publicly available information on this at this time.
New York state has seen a large influx of Amish families over the past decades, with over 40 communities founded across the state since the year 2000. The Amish communities in Otsego County would be a part of this general pattern of settlement.
Poor horse. The distracted driver should receive charges for killing the horse, which suffered.
