Virginia Man Faces “DUI Maiming” & Other Charges In Crash Injuring Six Amish

This is a follow-up on the buggy crash which happened Sunday evening in Buckingham County, Virginia (Farmville community). Authorities have now released the name of the driver, who is facing an array of charges. From CBS 19:

Police say a 2005 GMC Yukon hit the rear of the buggy and initially left the scene of the crash.

It stopped a short distance away, and the driver, identified as 23-year-old Stuart James Russell Swink of Dillwyn, was arrested.

He is facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, DUI maiming, driving without a valid operator’s license, and failure to drive on the right side of the highway.

It was described as a hit and run initially, and it sounds like that is what may have happened initially, though perhaps since Swink stopped a short distance away, that is why it’s not listed in the charges.

We know a bit more about the Amish family involved as well:

The buggy, driven by 43-year-old Amos Stoltzfuz, was carrying six people total. The passengers were an adult woman and four children.

Three people in the buggy were flown by MedFlight to area hospitals, and the other three were taken by ambulance.

All the injuries were described as “serious”, so this family may have a long road ahead of them. No doubt the local community (and beyond) will be there to support them. It’s just a shame this keeps happening.

    DUI MAIMING

It’s more than just a shame, Erik, it’s CRIMINAL and I for one am relieved that he’s been arrested. Hope the judge throws the book at him! People have got to STOP drinking & driving. Period. I am so tired of these stories. Prayers for the entire family.
